LA JOLLA, Calif.--- The Humboldt State Lumberjack duo of
Alexia Thrower and
Tyra Turner combined 45 points in the Lumberjacks' 81-65 loss to UC San Diego at RIMAC Arena in La Jolla, Calif. UC San Diego Tritons (16-4, 12-3 CCAA) shot 50% from the field including going 14-for-24 from beyond the arc to key its CCAA home victory over the visiting Lumberjacks. Thrower paced the 'Jacks with 25 points while Turner chipped in 20 points for the visitors.
FIRST QUARTER: Humboldt State (11-9, 7-8 CCAA) jumped out to a 6-0 lead on back to back treys by
Tyra Turner and
Alexia Thrower. The Tritons went on a 26-6 run in the next seven minutes to take a 26-12 lead, a lead they would not relinquish. A jumper by Turner off a pass from Turner cut the Triton lead to 26-14 heading into the second quarter.
SECOND QUARTER: A three by Emily Cangelosi gave UC San Diego a 29-14 in the first minute of the next quarter. Three times in the next five minutes, the Lumberjacks cut the deficit to single digits including on a three by
Alexia Thrower off a pass from
Molly Dixon, 36-28, with just four minutes left in the half. Two free throws by Julia Macabuhay gave the hosts a 49-35 lead heading into the locker room.
THIRD QUARTER: UC San Diego took a 55-35 lead in the first two minutes of the second half on a trey by Brianna Carlos. A free throw by
Tyra Turner with 5:24 left in the third quarter cut UCSD's lead to 58-43, but the Tritons took a 69-45 lead with a little under three minutes left in the quarter. Two Dixon free throws cut the Triton lead to 72-50 heading into the final quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER: Twice in the first four minutes of the final quarter, HSU cut the hosts' lead to (19) including 76-57 off a lay-up by
Gabrielle Carbajal off a pass from
Alexia Thrower. Two free throws by Sydney Brown gave UCSD a 78-57 lead with five minutes left in regulation. The 'Jacks cut the deficit to 78-63 on a free throw by Thrower, but that is the closest HSU would get as UC San Diego took the 81-65 victory.
STILL IN EIGHTH PLACE: Humboldt State stayed in eighth place with the loss this evening with its 7-8 CCAA record. They are percentage points out of seventh place (Chico State).
THIRD STRAIGHT: Tyra Turner recorded her third straight game scoring 20 points or more. The reigning CCAA Player of the Week scored 20 points, going 7-for-21 from the field including connecting on three of her attempts from beyond the arc and going three-for-five from the line. She now has 1080 points in her career in the Green and Gold.
16 STRAIGHT: Alexia Thrower scored 25 points, which was the 16
th straight game that she scored in double digits for the Lumberjacks. She also made a career high four three's this evening out of her eight attempts. The senior has scored 899 points in her two-year career at HSU.
14/10: The Lumberjacks had 14 assists with 10 turnovers this evening.
Tyra Turner and
Alexia Thrower combined for eight assists and four turnovers while
Molly Dixon had three assists and three turnovers.
UP NEXT: Humboldt State will end its road trip to Southern California this Saturday afternoon with a 1pm CCAA game at Cal State San Marcos. The Cougars defeated Stanislaus State 73-59 in San Marcos earlier this evening. Earlier this year on January 9 in Arcata, the 'Jacks lost 59-56 in overtime to the Cougars.
