SAN MARCOS, Calif.--- Cal State San Marcos (17-4, 12-4 CCAA) outscored the visiting Humboldt State Lumberjacks 25-13 in the third quarter to key its 81-70 CCAA victory. Three players scored in double digits for the Lumberjacks paced by
Alexia Thrower's 24 points while
Molly Dixon tied her season with 18 points.
Gabrielle Carbajal chipped in 11 points for the visitors.
FIRST QUARTER: A three by
Molly Dixon off a pass from
Gabrielle Carbajal an 11-9 lead five minutes into the first quarter. Another three by Dixon, this time off a pass from
Madeline Hatch increased the Lumberjack lead to 14-9. Humboldt State (11-10, 7-9 CCAA) increased its lead to 19-11 with three minutes left in the quarter on Dixon's third trey of the quarter off another pass from Hatch. Cal State San Marcos cut the Lumberjack lead to 19-15, but an old-fashioned three-point play by Dixon gave HSU a 22-15 lead. A Dynnah Buckner jumper cut the 'Jack lead to 22-17 heading into the second quarter.
SECOND QUARTER: Emma Forel's lay-up on CSUSM's possession of the second quarter cut the Lumberjack lead to 22-19. Humboldt State scored the next four points all by
Alexia Thrower as the 'Jacks took a 26-19 lead. The Cougars went on a 12-4 lead to take a 31-30 lead with a little under two minutes left in the half. A three by
Gabrielle Carbajal off a pass from
Molly Dixon gave HSU back the 33-31 lead. The last minute went back and forth with a lay-up by Forel tying the game at 37-37 for the Cougars heading into the half.
THIRD QUARTER: The hosts continued their run in the third quarter as they took a 50-44 lead on a lay-up by Emma Forel four minutes into the third ten-minute period. An
Alexia Thrower lay-up capped a mini 4-0 run by the 'Jacks as they cut the deficit to 50-48. The Cougars followed that 'Jack run with a 10-0 run as they took a 60-48 lead with just 1:22 left in the quarter. Two made throws by Thrower cut HSU's deficit to 60-50, but a jumper by Stephanie Custodio gave CSUSM a 62-50 heading into the final quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER: Twice early in the fourth quarter including at the 7:20 mark, the Cougars took a 13-point lead (67-54). A lay-up by
Alexia Thrower cut the Cougar lead to 67-57, but the hosts increased their lead to 76-62 with just 2:48 left in regulation. Two free throws by Chloe Eackles increased the Cougar lead to 81-65. A lay-up by Thrower capped a 5-0 run to end the game for HSU, but it was a little too late as the Cougars took the 81-70 victory.
THROWER STREAK CONTINUES: Alexia Thrower recorded her 21
st straight game this season with double digits in scoring. This evening she scored 24 points on nine-for-21 shooting from the field and went a perfect six-for-six from the line. She also had seven rebounds and four assists.
TURNER'S STREAK SNAPPED: Tyra Turner's streak of four straight scoring in double digits including three streak of 20-points games was snapped this afternoon. This afternoon, she had. Four points to go with her five rebounds and one assist and two steals.
DIXON: Molly Dixon tied her career high this afternoon with 18 points. She went five-for-ten from the field and connected on three of her attempts from beyond the arc and made five free throws.
ONCE AGAIN: Once game, Humboldt State had a game with more assists than turnovers. This afternoon, the 'Jacks had 14 assists with nine turnovers with three players dishing out four each in
Gabrielle Carbajal,
Madeline Hatch and
Alexia Thrower.
BACK HOME: Humboldt State returns to Lumberjack Arena this week for a pair of CCAA games. The 'Jacks will host Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday, February 6 and Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday, February 8. Both games with 5:30pm scheduled tip-offs.
