ARCATA, Calif..--- Humboldt State used 14 three-point field goals to key its 79-72 win over the visiting Stanislaus State Warriors this evening at Lumberjack Arena. Madeline Hatch had a season high 18 points to lead the way for the Lumberjacks as she connected six of HSU's 14 three-point field goals. Alexia Thrower scored 17 points, all in the second half, while Gabrielle Carbajal chipped in 15 points while Molly Dixon added 11 for the victors.
QUOTES FROM THE COACH: "I loved how we were aggressive on offense and we really shared the ball tonight," said head coach Michelle Bento-Jackson. "We made a conscious effort to make the extra pass and I was pleased with our shot selection. I also thought we executed our defensive game plan pretty well. We had a couple of spurts where we didn't make it tough enough on Stanislaus but we regrouped and did what we needed to do to win the game."
FIRST QUARTER: A lay-up by Gabrielle Carbajal gave Humboldt State an 8-3 lead four minutes into the first quarter. Stanislaus State (7-6, 5-3 CCAA) cut the Lumberjack lead to 8-7 on a lay-up by Lizzy Alexander, but back to back three's by Madeline Hatch and Sandin Kidder increased HSU's lead to 14-7. A three by Myani Thornton cut the HSU lead to 16-10 heading into the second quarter.
SECOND QUARTER: A jumper by Sandin Kidder gave the hosts an 18-10 lead in the first minute of the second quarter. Kyanna Davis' lay-up cut the Lumberjack lead to 18-15, but a three by Madeline Hatch gave HSU a 24-17 lead off a pass from Tyra Turner. A three by Gabrielle Carbajal off an assist from Tyra Turner increased the hosts' lead to 29-21 heading into the locker room.
THIRD QUARTER: The Warriors started the third quarter on a 6-2 run to cut the HSU lead to 31-27. The Lumberjacks took a 44-35 lead on a Molly Dixon lay-up with just 4:30 left in the quarter. A three by Caitlin Keding cut the 'Jack lead to 46-40, but the Lumberjacks finished the quarter outscoring the Warriors 5-3 to take a 51-43 heading into the final quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER: Humboldt State (9-4, 5-3 CCAA) started the final quarter on a 5-2 run capped by an Alexia Thrower lay-up to take a 56-45 lead. Stanislaus State wouldn't go away as the visitors cut HSU's lead to 63-58 with a little under four minutes left in regulation. A lay-up by Thrower off a pass from Molly Dixon increased the Lumberjack lead to 68-58 with 1:58 on the clock. Two free throws by Tyra Turner increased the Lumberjack lead to 71-60. The Warriors went on a 12-6 run to cut HSU's lead to 77-72, but only six seconds were on the clock. Two free throws by Dixon made the final 79-72.
SEASON HIGH: Madeline Hatch had a season high 18 points connecting on six of her 16 attempts from beyond the arc. Hatch also had an assist, a steal and two rebounds.
ALL IN THE SECOND HALF: Alexia Thrower scored all 17 of her points in the second half. She finished the evening with 17 points while grabbing six rebounds and dishing out two assists.
17/9: Humboldt State had 17 assists and just nine turnovers paced by Tyra Turner's six assists and two turnovers while Gabrielle Carbajal had five assists and two turnovers.
ALSO IN DOUBLE DIGITS: Besides Madeline Hatch's 18 points and Alexia Thrower's 17 points, two other players scored in double digits in Gabrielle Carbajal (15 points) and Molly Dixon (11 points).
UP NEXT: Humboldt State will end its three-game home stand next week with a pair of CCAA games. The Lumberjacks will host No. 24 Cal State San Marcos (Jan. 9) and No. 22 UC San Diego (Jan. 11).
