ARCATA, Calif.--- Humboldt State outscored Cal Poly Pomona 43-33 to key its 72-69 come-from-behind victory this evening in Lumberjack Arena.
Alexia Thrower recorded her eighth double-double with 24 points and 13 rebounds.
Tyra Turner and
Gabrielle Carbajal each chipped in 16 points for the victors.
FIRST QUARTER: A Kasey Smit jumper gave Cal Poly Pomona (14-8, 10-6 CCAA) a 6-2 lead in the first five minutes of the game. Two made free throws by
Alexia Thrower tied the game at 10-10 with just 1:44 left in the quarter. The final minutes of the quarter the two teams traded baskets as
Sandin Kidder tied the game at 12-12 on a lay-up heading into the next quarter.
SECOND QUARTER: The Broncos took a 24-18 lead three minutes into the second quarter. An
Alexia Thrower jumper off a pass from
Gabrielle Carbajal cut the Bronco lead to 26-22 mid-way through the quarter. Cal Poly Pomona increased its lead to 33-24 with just 2:24 left in the half, but a three by
Molly Dixon off a pass from Carbajal cut the deficit to 33-29. A three by Mylah Andrada gave CPP a 36-29 lead heading into the second half.
THIRD QUARTER: Twice early in the third quarter, Cal Poly Pomona increased its lead to 14 including on a free throw by Eilia Orji with 6:18 left in the third ten-minute period. A three by Garielle Carbajal cut HSU's deficit to 46-42 with just 3:40 left in the quarter. A
Tyra Turner jumper gave HSU a 52-51 lead with just 75 seconds to go in the quarter. A three by Carbajal off a pass from Turner gave HSU a 54-52 lead heading into the final quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER: Humboldt State (12-10, 8-9 CCAA) took a 58-52 lead on two made free throws by
Tyra Turner one minute into the final quarter. Two made free throws by Kasey Smith cut the 'Jack lead to 63-62, but once again the hosts increased their lead to 64-62 on a three by
Madeline Hatch off a pass from Turner. Two free throws by
Alexia Thrower increased HSU's lead to 68-62, but the Broncos didn't go away as they cut the lead to 68-67 and took a 69-68 lead with just 23 seconds left in regulation. Turner and Hatch went four-for-four from the line in the final seconds as HSU took the 72-69 victory.
NUMBER EIGHT: Alexia Thrower recorded her eighth double-double of the season by scoring 24 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. She also had three assists.
JUST ONE: Humboldt State went 14-for-15 from the line with
Tyra Turner and
Madeline Hatch going a combined eight-for-eight.
Alexia Thrower went six-for-seven.
THREE IN DOUBLE DIGITS: Three 'Jacks scored in double digits paced by
Alexia Thrower's 24 points.
Tyra Turner and
Gabrielle Carbajal each scored 16 points. Turner also had seven assists and three steals to go with her 16 points.
EIGHTH PLACE: Humboldt State is now in eighth place, just percentage points out of seventh place and 2.5 out of sixth place.
UP NEXT: Humboldt State will host Cal State San Bernardino this Saturday at 5:30pm. The Coyotes lost 78-57 at Stanislaus State this evening.
