SEASIDE, Calif..--- The Cal State Monterey Bay Otters opened this weekend's four-game CCAA series taking the first two games from the visiting Humboldt State Lumberjacks 9-7 and 6-2.
Micaela Harris and
Mariah Kalamaras went a combined four-for-eight, driving in three runs and scoring a run in game one. In the night cap,
Adriana Chavez had two of HSU's six hits while Harris drove in both of the Lumberjacks' runs.
GAME ONE: Cal State Monterey Bay (6-4, 2-4 CCAA) took a 1-0 lead in its half of the first inning when Alyssa Burt's two-out double brought in Michaela Decker. The Otters doubled their lead to 2-0 on a another run scoring double this time in the bottom of the second off the bat of Gabrielle Forbes.
Humboldt State cut the deficit in half, 2-1, on
Chloe Koll's two-out run scoring double which brought in
Lauren Lipe. Cal State Monterey Bay increased its lead to 5-1 with a three-run fourth inning keyed by a two-run triple by Forbes.
The 'Jacks used a four-run fifth inning to tie the game at 5-5.
Katelyn Dendas and Lipe led off the inning with back to back walks.
Jacci Crowe pinch ran for Dendas. Both runners scored on a one-out single by
Danica Grier.
Haley Suter walked and then Grier advanced on a wild pitch to place runners on first and third with one out. Suter stole second and Grier scored on a single by
Micaela Harris. Suter scored on a single by
Mariah Kalamaras which finished the scoring for the 'Jacks.
Cal State Monterey Bay took the lead back on a two-run two-out home run by Jamie Sugimoto in the bottom of the fifth, 7-5. Dendas' solo home run in the top of the sixth cut the deficit in half in the Lumberjacks' half of the sixth.
The Otters increased their lead to 9-6 on a two-out two-run double by Hayley Fein. HSU cut the hosts' lead to 9-7 on a double by Kalamaras which brought in Harris after she reached on a lead-off single, but that is the closest HSU would get as CSUMB took the opener 9-7.
GAME ONE LEADERS: Mariah Kalamaras had two of HSU's seven hits while
Lauren Lipe scored two of the Lumberjacks' seven runs.
Danica Grier and Kalamaras each drove in two runs for the 'Jacks.
Lexee Sheiring (1-1) suffered the loss in relief for the Lumberjacks.
Gabrielle Forbes drove in three of CSUMB's nine runs while Michaela Decker scored two of its nine runs. Hayle Fein, Korina Krueg and Forbes each had two hits. Cassie Gasper picked up the complete game win for the hosts.
GAME TWO: The Otters took a 2-0 lead on a two-run single by Hayle Fein in their half of the first inning. They added an insurance run in the third inning to take a 3-0 lead. Humboldt State (3-6, 2-4 CCAA) cut the Otter lead to 3-2 with a two-run fourth inning. After
Danica Grier reached on a fielder's choice with one out,
Haley Suter singled up the middle to put runners on second and third with one out.
Micaela Harris drove home both Grier and Suter to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Cal State Monterey Bay broke the game open with a four-run sixth capped by a two-run double by pinch-hitter Nadya Orozco as the hosts took a 6-2 lead. Humboldt State had a chance cut into the Otter lead in its last inning.
Adriana Chavez had a lead-off single, went to second on a sacrifice by
Jenna Sobrero.
Lauren Lipe put runners on first and second with one out when she was hit by a pitch. The next two 'Jack batters struck out and line out to left field as CSUMB took the 6-2 victory.

Megan Holt (2-3) suffered the loss while striking out three and walking one.
Korina Krueg had two of CSUMB's nine hits and scored two of its six runs. Hayley Fein and Nadya Orozco drove in four of its six runs. Fein (3-2) picked up the complete game victory.
