HSU’s Rally Falls Short in 65-63 Loss at Stanislaus State Despite Thrower's and Kidder’s Double-Double

TURLOCK, Calif.—Despite Alexia Thrower and Sandin Kidder combining for 45 points and 24 rebounds, Humboldt State's rally fell short in a 65-63 road loss at Stanislaus State.  Even though, the Lumberjacks lost they earned a berth in the eight-team CCAA Basketball Championships which start on March 3 with the First Round.
 
FIRST QUARTER:  Stanislaus State (14-12, 12-9 CCAA) took a 14-5 lead, five minutes into the game capped by a Kaleigh Taylor lay-up.  HSU cut the deficit to 18-12 on a lay-up by Sandin Kidder off a pass from Madeline Hatch with 34 seconds left in the quarter, but a three by Lizzy Anderson gave the hosts a 21-12 leading heading into the second quarter. 
 
SECOND QUARTER:  A three of Madeline Hatch off of one of Tyra Turner's six assists cut the hosts' lead to 21-15 to begin the second quarter.  Humboldt State continued its run and cut the Warriors' lead to 26-22 on a lay-up by Sandin Kidder four minutes into the second ten period.  With 2:50 left in the half, a a lay-up by Kidder cut the deficit to 30-29.  Stanislaus State increased its lead to 34-29 on a jumper by Brittney Livington, but a lay-up by Alexia Thrower off a pass from Kidder cut HSU's deficit to 34-31 heading into the half.
 
THIRD QUARTER:  The Warriors outscored HSU 8-3 in the first three minutes of the third quarter to take a 42-34 lead.  A three by Gabrielle Carbajal off a pass from Sandin Kidder capped an 8-2 run by the 'Jacks as they cut the Warrior lead to 44-42.  HSU cut its deficit to just one (46-45) on a three by Alexia Thrower off a pass from Carbajal with just two minutes left in the third quarter.  The Warriors finished the quarter on a 7-3 run to take a 53-48 lead heading into the final quarter.
 
FOURTH QUARTER:  Humboldt State (15-11, 11-10 CCAA) started the final quarter on a 7-0 run to take a 55-53 lead capped by a three-pointer by Sandin Kidder off a pass from Tyra Turner.  The 'Jacks increased their lead to 63-55 with just 2:49 left in the game on two made free throws by Alexia Thrower.  The Warriors didn't go away as they took a 64-63 lead on two made free throws by Angelica Baylon with just 15 seconds to go in the game.  HSU had a chance to take the lead back, but the 'Jacks turned the ball over and Kyanna Davis' made free throw sealed the win with a 65-63 victory.
 
10/2: Alexia Thrower recorded her tenth double-double this evening with a 29-point, 11-rebound performance.  She went 10-for-18 from the field including four-for-six from beyond the arc.  She also went five-for-seven from the line.  Sandin Kidder recorded her second double-double of the season by scoring 16-points and grabbing 13 rebounds.  She went six-for-eight from the field including connecting on one of her two attempts from three's and three-for-three from the line.  Kidder also had six assists in 29 minutes.
 
POST-SEASON:  Even though Humboldt State lost this evening, the Lumberjacks clinched a berth in the 2019-20 CCAA Basketball Championships as Cal State L.A. lost 56-52 to Cal Poly Pomona this evening.  The Jacks can finish as high as fourth and as low as eighth depending on how the final week in the regular season fairs in the CCAA next week.
 
TURNER:  Tyra Turner had six assists this evening which gives her 505 assists for her career.  She is six away from passing Trina Dukes (1991-95) as becoming the Lumberjacks' all-time assists leader.  She also now has 238 steals for her career which is third on HSU's career list.  Her 1,138 points is seventh in HSU's points list.
 
THROWER:  Alexia Thrower has scored 1,062 points in her two-year career at HSU and grabbed 525 rebounds.  She is ninth on HSU's scoring list.
 
UP NEXT:  Humboldt State will finish off its 2019-20 regular season when the Lumberjacks host Chico State this Thursday, February 27 at 5:30pm in Lumberjack Arena.  Prior to the game, HSU will recognize its five seniors in Gabrielle Carbajal, Molly Dixon, Madeline Hatch, Alexia Thrower and Tyra Turner in a ceremony prior to the game. This will also be Think Pink Night as Lumberjack fans are encouraged to wear pink.
