ARCATA, Calif..--- Humboldt State saw its rally fall short in the night cap of today's CCAA doubleheader with Sonoma State. The Lumberjacks lost the opener 12-3 (5) and the night cap 15-12.
Lauren Lipe went six-for-eight with three runs scored while
Danica Grier went four-for-seven with five runs batted in including two home runs.
Haley Suter went two-for-seven with four runs batted in and two runs scored including a grand slam home run for the 'Jacks.
GAME ONE: Sonoma State (11-7, 8-4 CCAA) took a 6-0 lead after its half of the second inning. Jordyn Martinez's three-run home run keyed the six-run inning for the visitors. Humboldt State came right back and cut the deficit in half.
Mariah Tovar had a lead-off solo home run in the bottom of the second inning. The Lumberjacks took of advantage of two Seawolf errors for their second two runs of the inning.
The Seawolves took an 8-0 lead in the third on a two-out two-run double by
Amber Orchard. They increased their lead to 12-3 with a four-run fourth inning. Sonoma State held the Lumberjacks scoreless in the final two innings as the guests took the opener 12-3 in five innings.
GAME ONE LEADERS: Lauren Lipe and
Micaela Harris each had two hits for the 'Jacks.
Mariah Tovar drove in one of HSU's runs with a solo home run.
Megan Escobar (0-3) took the loss in the start for the 'Jacks.
Lexee Sheiring pitched the final 1.1 innings of relief, giving up two hits and no runs while striking out two and walking one.
Five Seawolves had two hits a piece paced by Jordyn Martinez' two-for-three game with four runs batted in. Nalani Scates (2-5) recorded the win in relief for the visitors.
GAME TWO: The Seawolves jumped out to a 6-0 lead after their first at bat in the night cap. Megan Ambriz's grand slam home run capped the six-run inning. Sonoma State added a run in the second to take a 7-0 lead. Humboldt State (4-15, 3-13 CCAA) cut the Seawolf lead to 7-5 with a five-run second inning.
Mariah Tovar had a lead-off single, went to second when
Jenna Sobrero was hit by a pitch. With two outs,
Adriana Chavez had a bunt single to load the bases. Tovar scored on a single by
Lauren Lipe. With the count 2-1,
Haley Suter hit a grand slam home run to cut the SSU lead to 7-5.
Sonoma State took an 8-5 lead in its half of the third on a Bella Chadwell run scoring single. The Seawolves added two more runs in the fourth on a two-run home run by Alee Balanon. They took advantage of a 'Jack error in the fifth to take an 11-5 lead.
HSU did not go away as the 'Jacks cut the deficit to 11-7 with a two-run fifth. The 'Jacks added another run in the sixth on a solo home run by
Danica Grier to cut the guests' lead to 11-8. Sonoma State came right back with a four-run seventh on a Nicole Renner grand slam home run to take a 15-8 lead heading into HSU's seventh.
The hosts made it interesting in their half of the seventh. With two outs, Chavez and Lipe had back to back singles. Suter walked to load the bases. Grier hit the first pitch she saw over the left field fence for her second home run of the game and fifth of third of the season to cut the 'Jack deficit to 15-12.
Micaela Harris walked on the Lumberjacks' next at bat, but Teri Danenberg induced the next Lumberjack batter to pop out to short to preserve the SSU 15-12 victory.

Danica Grier had five runs batted in with two home runs including her first grand slam of her collegiate career.
Mariah Tovar also had three hits while
Adriana Chavez went two-for-four. Alee Balanon paced SSU with her four hits while Nicole Renner and Megan Ambriz each drove in four runs.
Lexee Sheiring suffered the loss for the 'Jacks.
Taylor Culp finished the game for HSU. Teri Danenberg picked up the win in relief for SSU.
UP NEXT: Humboldt State will travel to the Bay Area on March 6-7 for a four-game series in Hayward against Cal State East Bay. The two teams will play a noon starting doubleheader on Friday and an 11am starting doubleheader on Saturday. HSU will return home on March 13-14 for a four-game series with Stanislaus State.
