Lumberjacks Take Night Cap 16-0 to Split Doubleheader At Cal State East Bay

HAYWARD, Calif..---  Humboldt State spilt this afternoon's CCAA doubleheader with Cal State East Bay in Hayward taking the night cap 16-0 (5) after losing the opener 8-6 on a walk-off home run.  In the night cap, Mariah Tovar went three-for-three while driving in six runs and scoring twice in the night cap.  Lexee Sheiring and Haley Suter each hit home runs for HSU in game two while Sheiring picked up the win. Sheiring had six strikeouts while giving up just three hits and walking two in five innings of work.   In the opener, Morgan Brant went three-for-four while driving in two runs to lead the way for the 'Jacks.
 
GAME ONE:  Sarah Fukushima's run scoring double gave Cal State East Bay an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.  The Lumberjacks tied the game at 1-1 on a Morgan Brant two-out run scoring single that brought in Mariah Tovar in the top of the second. 
 
Cal State East Bay took a 4-1 lead with a three-run second inning capped by a two-out run scoring double by Maddie Ramirez.  Humboldt State cut the deficit in half in the top of the third.  Lauren Lipe had a lead-off single and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Danica Grier
 
HSU tied the game at 4-4 with a two-run fourth inning.  Katelyn Dendas had a lead-off triple and scored on a Brant single.  Brant later scored on a run scoring one-out single by Lipe to tie the game at 4-4.  Cal State East Bay retook the lead in its half of the fourth on a two-run home run by Emilie Portesi, 6-4.
 
Once again, the Lumberjacks tied the game this time with a two-run fifth inning.  Micaela Harris began the inning reaching on an error.  She stole second and scored on a single by Mariah Kalamaras who later scored on a single by Haley Suter to tie the game at 6-6.
 
The Pioneers won the game on a walk-off two-run home run by Jenna Gonzalez in its half of the seventh inning.
 
GAME ONE LEADERS:  Morgan Brant went three-for-four with two runs batted in and a run scored for HSU.  Lauren Lipe had two hits and Micaela Harris stole four bases.  Megan Escobar took tehl oss for the 'Jacks in relief.  Four batters had two hits apiece for the Pioneers in Emilie Portesi, Sarah Fukushima and, Maddie Ramirez and Jenna Gonzales.  Anamarie Beard picked up the win for the Pioneers in relief.
 
GAME TWO:  Humboldt State (5-16, 4-14 CCAA) took a 5-0 lead in the top of the first.  Mariah Tovar had three-run double to start the scoring. Starting pitcher, Lexee Sheiring, gave HSU a 5-0 lead with a two-run home run.  The 'Jacks broke the game open with a five-run second inning which was started by a Haley Suter solo home run. 

Later on in the inning, Megan Escobar had a two-run single to cap the scoring for HSU as the 'Jacks took a 10-0 lead.  The guests took a 14-0 lead after a four-run third inning which was started by a two-run double by Tovar.  Humboldt State increased its lead to 16-0 on a two-run double by Jenna Sobrero in the fifth as the 'Jacks took the night cap 16-0 in five innings. 
 
GAME TWO LEADERS:  Leading the way for the 'Jacks was Mariah Tovear going three-for-three with six runs batted in and three runs scored.  Megan Escobar went two-for-three with three runs batted in while Mariah Kalamaras, Lexee Sheiring and Megan Escobar each had two hits.  Sheiring picked up the win improving to 2-2.  She pitched five innings, striking out six and walking two while giving up two hits. 
 
UP NEXT:  The two teams will finish off the four-game series tomorrow with an 11am starting doubleheader in Hayward.
