HAYWARD, Calif..--- Humboldt State swept today's road conference doubleheader in Hayward, Calif., 17-1 (5) and 9-8 (5) to take the weekend series from the Cal State East Bay Pioneers three games to one.
Lexee Sheiring picked up the victory in all three games including both games this afternoon. Sheiring also had a grand slam home run in the opener and drove in what proved to be the game-winning run in the night cap.
Izzy Starr went five-for-eight this afternoon, driving in four runs, scoring five runs and hitting two home runs.
GAME ONE: The Lumberjacks took an 1-0 lead on a
Mariah Kalamaras single that brought in
Mariah Tovar in the top of the second inning after Tovar reached on a lead-off single. Tovar went to second on a single by
Morgan Brant and scored on Kalamaras' single. Brant scored when
Lexee Sheiring reached on a Pioneer fielding error. With two outs,
Lauren Lipe walked to load the bases for
Danica Grier who hit a two-run single to give HSU a 4-0 lead. The 'Jacks added another run on a single by
Micaela Harris to take a 5-0 lead.
Humboldt State (7-16, 6-14 CCAA) added two more runs in the top of the fourth inning. Grier had a two-out single which scored
Haley Suter who earlier in the inning reached on a one-out single. Lipe scored HSU's seventh run on a successful double steal attempt.
The 'Jacks broke the game open with a ten-run fifth inning with Sheiring's grand slam home run being the key hit of the inning. Later on in the inning,
Izzy Starr and
Katelyn Dendas had back to back run scoring doubles. Jaccie Crowe's two-out single brought in Dendas with HSU's 17
th run of the game.
Sheiring (3-2) who picked up the win, didn't' give up a run until the Pioneers' half of the fifth inning on a two-out run scoring single by Jennifer Palamares. Humboldt State took the opener 17-1 in five innings.
GAME ONE LEADERS: Lexee Sheiring and
Danica Grier each had four runs batted in while Grier had three hits and Sheiring had a grand slam home run.
Izzy Starr went two-for-two with two runs scored while
Haley Suter and
Lauren Lipe each scored two runs for the 'Jacks. Sheiring picked up her second win of the series, pitching five innings, giving up three hits a run while striking out three and walking two.
GAME TWO: A two-run home run by
Izzy Starr gave Humboldt State a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning of the night cap. A solo home run by Starr in the fourth increased the guests' lead to 3-0. Cal State East Bay tied the game at 3-3 with a three-run fourth inning keyed by a two-run double by Jeana Gonzales.
The Pioneers took a 5-3 lead with a two-run fifth inning. Maddie Ramirez' single started the scoring the hosts. Humboldt State retook the lead in its half of the sixth inning.
Mariah Tovar had a lead-off single, went to third when
Lexee Sheiring reached on an infield single. Starr walked to load the bases.
Jacci Crowe pinch ran for Sheiring. With one out,
Morgan Brant had a two-run pinch hit single to tie the game at 5-5. Starr scored when
Mariah Kalamaras reached on a fielder's choice to give HSU a 6-5 lead.
Lauren Lipe drove home Brant as HSU took a 7-5 lead. The 'Jacks increased their lead to 8-5 on a single by
Micaela Harris which brought in Kalamaras.
Cal State East Bay (8-19, 6-14 CCAA) tied the game at 8-8 with a two-run seventh inning. The score remained tied until the Lumberjack ninth. Harris had a lead-off double and later scored on a Sheiring single up the middle to give HSU a 9-8 lead.
The Pioneers had the bases loaded in their half of the ninth with one out. Sheiring induced the next Pioneer to fly out to
Jenna Sobrero in center field. The last batter popped out to Harris at short as the 'Jacks took the night cap 9-8.
GAME TWO LEADERS: Izzy Starr went three-for-four with three runs batted in and three runs scored.
Lauren Lipe and
Micaela Harris each had two hits and drove in a run as did
Lexee Sheiring. Sheiring picked up her third win of the weekend and improved to 4-2. Abby Greer suffered the loss for Cal State East Bay. Maddie Ramirez and Jeana Gonzales went a combined six-for-10 with four runs batted in and three runs scored.
UP NEXT: Humboldt State will return home to host Stanislaus State in a four-game conference series on March 13-14. The series will start with a 1pm starting doubleheader on March 13 and conclude with an 11am starting doubleheader on March 14.
