ARCATA, Calif--- Despite
Anna Hospodar recording a season high 16 kills and
Lindsey McLaughlin adding 13, the Humboldt State Lumberjacks lost a tight four-set match to the visiting Sonoma State Seawolves (20-25, 21-25, 25-18, 25-23) this evening in a CCAA match at Lumberjack Arena.
Hannah Cantrell had seven total blocks for the Lumberjacks while
Carla Crespo had 27 digs and
Nicole Yakushenok and
Riley White combined for 33 total digs.
FIRST SET: Humboldt State came out strong in the first set taking a 4-1 lead early capped by a block by
Hannah Cantrell. Sonoma State came back though and took a 15-12 lead on a kill by Leilani Hallman. The Seawolves (8-8, 6-3 CCAA) increased their lead to 20-14 on a service ace by Angel Gamboa. The 'Jacks did not give up as they cut the deficit to 20-16 on back to back kills by
Katie Nall an
Lindsey McLaughlin. Once again, SSU took a six-poitn lead (23-17, but HSU cut the Sewaolf lead to 24-20 on a kill by
Anna Hospodar. It was a little too late as Sonoma State took the set 25-20.
SECOND SET: The Seawolves took 9-5 lead in the second set. Humboldt State (3-9, 2-7 CCAA) took a 11-10 lead after scoring six of the next seven points capped by a combined block by
Hannah Cantrell and
Katie Nall. A kill by Amy Trephan gave the lead back to the visitors, 15-13. HSU tied the set at 19-18 on a service ace by
Nicole Yakushenok. SSU took a 22-19 lad, but once against HSU fought back and cut the deficit to 22-21. Sonoma State finished the set off taking the final three points, 25-21) capped by a kill by Leilani Hallman to take a 2-0 advantage in the match.
THIRD SET: Sonoma State came out of the break and took a 4-1 lead in the third set. The visitors increased that lead to 10-6 on a kill by Amy Trephan. The 'Jacks took their first lead of the set, 11-10, as they scored five straight points capped by four consecutive kills by
Elyse McKinney and
Anna Hospodar. They increased that lead to 15-12 on another service ac by
Nicole Yakushenok. HSU built its lead to 23-17 on back to back kills by Hospodar off of assists from
Riley White. The Seawolves cut the HSU lead to 23-18, but the 'Jacks finished the set off taking took the final two points on a kill by McKinney and a combined block by
Hannah Cantrell and Yakushenok to cut the SSU lead in the match 2-1.
FOURTH SET: Once again, Sonoma State came out strong and took a 7-2 early in the set. A service ace by
Kaitlyn Patterson and a kill by
Lindsey McLaughlin cut the deficit to 8-5, but SSU scored the next three points to take a 11-5 lead. The Seawolves increased that lead to 15-8, but HSU would not go away. The 'Jacks battled and tied the match at 19-19 on back to back kills by
Elyse McKinney and
Lindsey McLaughlin. HSU eventually took a 21-20 lead on a service ace by
Kaitlyn Patterson. SSU scored the next two points to take a 22-21 lead. Once again, HSU battled back and tied the set at 22-22 on a kill by Hospodar. The Seawolves took a 24-22 lead, but Hospodar's 16
th kill cut the deficit to 24-23. Sonoma State took the set 25-23 on a bad serve by the 'Jacks and the match 3-1.
LEADERS: Anna Hospodar had a season high 16 kills while
Lindsey McLaughlin added 13.
Hannah Cantrell had seven total blocks and
Nicole Yakushenok had three service aces. Leading the way with her 27 digs was
Carla Crespo while Yakushenok had 17 assists and
Riley White recorded 16.
