ROHNERT PARK, Calif--- Sonoma State (9-8, 6-3 CCAA) swept the season series from Humboldt State this evening with a three-set win (25-16, 25-21, 25-11) over the visiting Lumberjacks in a CCAA match-up at The Wolves Den in Rohnert Park.
Lindsey McLaughlin and
Katie Nall led the 'Jacks with their combined 13 kills while
Hannah Cantrell added five total blocks and McLaughlin chipped in four.
FIRST SET: The hosts took a 7-3 lead in the first set capped by an Angel Gamboa service ace. The 'Jacks cut the Seawolf lead to two six times including 15-13 on a kill by
Lindsey McLaughlin off an assist from
Carla Crespo. A Jessie Hobbs' kill increased the Sonoma State lead to 21-14. The hosts finished off the set taking four of the final six points, 25-16, to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
SECOND SET: Sonoma State had an 8-5 early lead in the second set and the hosts increased that lead to 13-9 on a kill by Jessie Hobbs. Humboldt State scored the next six consecutive points capped by a
Gianna Giacomotto service ace to take a 15-13 lead. The match was tied at 15-15, but HSU retook the lead on a combined block by
Hannah Cantrell and
Lindsey McLaughlin, 16-15. The hosts scored the next four points to take a 19-16 lead, but HSU cut the deficit to 19-18. Once again, Sonoma State increased its lead to three (21-18) but a McLaughlin kill off an assist from
Riley White stopped the Seawolf rally. SSU scored the next three points to take a 24-19 lead. HSU didn't go away as they cut the Seawolf lead to 24-21 capped by a
Carla Crespo service ace. A kill by Amy Trephan gave the hosts the 25-21 set two win as they took a 2-0 advantage in the match.
THIRD SET: Humboldt State trailed 7-3 early in the third set. The Seawolves increased that lead to 21-7. The 'Jacks tallied the next three points to cut the hosts' lead to 21-10, but Sonoma State scored four of the final five points to take the set 25-11 and the match 3-0.
LEADERS: Humboldt State (3-10, 2-8 CCAA) was led by
Lindsey McLaughlin's seven kills and
Katie Nall's six kills.
Gianna Giacomotto had two service aces while
Hannah Cantrell recording five total blocks and McLaughlin added four.
Nicole Yakushenok had a team high nine assists while
Carla Crespo recorded five digs.
UP NEXT; Humboldt State will return to Lumberjack Arena for a pair of CCAA matches against two top 25 teams. The 'Jacks will host No. 21 Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday, October 21 at 5pm. This will be the Lumberjacks' Dam Worth It Match in support of Mental Awareness. HSU will continue its brief two-match home stand on Saturday, October 23 at 7pm when they host 2019 NCAA Division II National Champion Cal State San Bernardino. The Coyotes are currently ranked No. 11 in the nation. This will be the Lumberjacks' Dig Pink Match.
