SEASIDE, Calif--- Humboldt State Lumberjacks fell in three sets (24-26, 18-25, 20-25) at Cal State Monterey Bay tshi evening in a CCAA match-up in Seaside.
Hannah Cantrell paced the 'Jacks with 12 kills and three total blocks while
Riley Tishlarich added 15 assists.
Nicole Yakushenok recorded 13 digs and
Carla Crespo chipped in 10 digs.
FIRST SET: Cal State Monterey Bay (9-8, 3-10 CCAA) took a 5-1 early lead in the match in set one. The 'Jacks scored eight of the next 11 points with four straight points coming off of kills by
Hannah Cantrell to take a 9-8 lead. The Otters retook the lead 13-11, but HSU tied the set at 15-15. The set went back and forth until HSU took a 20-18 lead. CSUMB scored six of the next eight points to take a 24-22 lead. HSU didn't go away as the 'Jacks tied the set at 24-24 on back to back kills by
Elyse McKinney and
Nicole Yakushenok. The Otters finished the set off scoring the final two points to take it 26-24.
SECOND SET: A
Hannah Cantrell ace gave Humboldt State a 4-1 lead. The 'Jacks increased that lead to 6-2 on a service ace by
Riley Tishlarich. A
Lindsey McLaughlin kill gave HSU a 14-11 lead, but the Otters fought back and took a 15-14 lead capped by a Mollin Helfrich kill. A kill by
Elyse McKinney tied the match at 15-15 for the guests, but CSUMB scored the next six straight points to take a 21-15 lead. HSU cut the deficit to 21-17 on back to back kills by McKinney and Cantrell. The hosts finished the set off scoring four of the final five points, 25-18, and took a 2-0 set advantage in the match.
THIRD SET: CSUMB took an early 8-3 lead in the third set. The Otters held that lead until HSU scored five consecutive points and cut the hosts' lead to 17-16. The 'Jacks kept their momentum and took a 19-18 lead on a
Nicole Yakushenok service ace. Cal State Monterey Bay came right back and scored five straight points to take a 23-18 lead. A kill by
Hannah Cantrell cut the deficit to 23-20, but the Otters finished the set off with the next two points to take it 25-20 and the match 3-0.
LEADERS: Hannah Cantrell had a team high 12 kills and three total blocks to lead the way for HSU.
Nicole Yakushenok had a team leading two service aces while
Riley Tishlarich added 15 assists and
Carla Crespo recorded 10 digs.
UP NEXT: Humboldt State will continue its four-match road trip with a 7pm match at SF State this evening. The Gators defeated Sonoma State on Friday evening in five sets. Earlier this season in Arcata, HSU lost in three sets to SF State.
