ARCATA, Calif--- The No. 13 Humboldt State Lumberjacks saw their seven-match shutout streak end this afternoon in a 1-0 loss to the visiting Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes (4-2, 2-0 CCAA). The Coyotes connected on a penalty kick by Francisco Sierra in the 33
rd minute as the 'Jacks were called for a handball. With the loss, Humboldt State falls to 6-1-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the CCAA.
FIRST HALF: It looked like the Coyotes were going to take the 1-0 lead in the first minute when
Adrian Gallardo recorded the first of his four saves on the day. HSU had a chance to take the lead when
Dylan Tovani's shot was stopped by the Coyotes' Juan Nieves in the 16
th minute. Three minutes later, Gallardo stopped Francisco Gomez's shot from going in the back of the net. Gallardo made another save in the 24
th minute when he stopped Tony Di Donato's shot on goal attempt. The Lumberjacks were called for the handball in the 33
rd minute and CSUSB's Sierra made them pay as he connected on the penalty kick. The hosts had a chance to tie the match at 1-1 with four minutes left in the half, but
Edgar Castaneda's shot was stopped by the Coyote goalkeeper as the match went into the half with Cal State San Bernardino leading 1-0.
SECOND HALF: Humboldt State came out of the locker room on fire as
Marco Silveira's shot attempt in the 48
th minute sailed wide left of the goal. Three minutes later,
Cole Falco's shot was blocked by the Coyote defense. Silveira had two more chances to tie the match for the 'Jacks when the first one went wide left and the second one was blocked by the Coyote defense in the 55
th minute. Silveira had another chance in the 78
th minute but once again it sailed wide left of the net in the 78
th minute. Cal State San Bernardino held the 'Jacks without a shot attempt in the final 12 minutes as the hung on for the 1-0 victory.
STREAK SNAPPED: Humboldt State saw its seven-match shutout streak end this afternoon. The 'Jacks tied the CCAA shutout streak record in Friday's 0-0 double overtime tie with Cal State San Marcos. Gallardo had four saves in goal for the hosts today. HSU also saw its seven-match unbeaten streak snapped today in the loss to the Coyotes.
UP NEXT: Humboldt State will begin a three-match road trip this Friday, October 8 with a 4pm CCAA match at Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson, Calif. The 'Jacks will return home on Sunday, October 17 at 2pm when they host Cal State East Bay at College Creek Field.
