LOS ANGELES, Calif--- The No. 8 Cal State Los Angeles Golden Eagles (11-2-2, 9-0-1 CCAA) used two first half goals to key their 3-0 win over the visiting Humboldt State Lumberjacks. With one match left in the regular season, the 'Jacks are in fifth place in the CCAA standings. The top six teams in the CCAA standings after Thursday's matches will receive a berth to the 2021 CCAA Soccer Championships which start on November 7.
FIRST HALF: Humboldt State had the first chance of the match to take the 1-0 lead, but
Marco Silveira's shot on goal attempt was stopped by the Golden Eagles' Alvaro Unanua in the third minute of the match.
Daniel Adeyeye had a chance to give the 'Jacks the lead but his shot went wide of the net in the 21
st minute. The match was scoreless until the 26
th minute. The Golden Eagles were fouled in the box and Morten Bjoershoel connected on the penalty kick to give the hosts the 1-0 lead. HSU had a chance to tie the match with three minutes left in the half, but
Dylan Tovani's shot attempt went wide left of the net. Cal State Los Angeles drove down the pitch and doubled their lead with 51 seconds left in the half as Gerard Hernando scored off a ball from Jeppe Paulsen to send the match into the half with the Golden Eagles leading 2-0.
SECOND HALF: The Golden Eagles had a chance for their third goal just seven minutes into the half, but
Adrian Gallardo stopped Solli Carl's penalty kick attempt. It looked like the Lumberjacks (10-3-2, 4-4-2 CCAA) were going to cut the deficit in half, but
Edgar Castaneda's shot on goal attempt was stopped by CSULA's keeper in the 54
th minute. The visitors had another shot to cut into the hosts' lead, but
Marco Silveira's shot hit the top of the post in the 62
nd minute. The 'Jacks had another chance one minute later, but
Devin Hauenstein's shot went wide left. One minute later, Cal State Los Angeles increased its lead to 3-0 on a goal by Simon Johansen off a ball from Aidan Wait. HSU tried to cut into the Golden Eagle lead, but Marcus Abdel Malek's shot went left of the goal in the 69
th minute. The 'Jacks had another chance for their first goal but
Ramiro Rosas' free kick went off the left post in the 76
th minute.
Gou Nitta and
Marco Silveira each had shot on goal attempts stopped by the Golden Eagles' Alvaro Unanua in the final minutes as CSULA took the match 3-0.
SLIGHT ADVANTAGE: Cal State Los Angeles, who is fourth in the first NCAA Division II Super Region IV Rankings, only out-shot the 'Jacks 13-10 including 7-4 in shot on goal attempts.
Marco Silveira had three of HSU's 10 shot attempts including two on goal.
Edgar Castaneda and
Gou Nitta had the other two shot on goal attempts for the Lumberjacks.
NUMBER FIFTH HEADING INTO FINAL MATCH OF REGULAR SEASON: Humboldt State is fifth in the CCAA heading into the final match of the regular season this Thursday, November 4. The top six teams at the end of Thursday's matches will receive a berth to the CCAA Soccer Championships. The first round starts on November 7 with No. 3 hosting No. 6 and No. 4 hosting No. 5. The top two seeds receive a first-round bye with semi-finals and final matches taking place at Cal State Los Angeles November 12 and 14. Cal State Los Angeles is in first with 28 points followed by Cal Poly Pomona at 26 points. Cal State San Bernardino (19 points) is third and Cal State Dominguez Hills (18 points) is fourth. HSU is in fifth place with 14 points followed by Sonoma State in sixth with 13 points. Still alive for a berth are Chico State (12 points) and Cal State San Marcos (10 points).
Later today, Cal State San Marcos is hosting Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State San Bernardino is hosting Cal State Monterey Bay. This Thursday's matches are: Cal Poly Pomona at Cal State Los Angeles, Cal State San Marcos at Cal State San Bernardino, Humboldt State at Chico State and Sonoma State at San Francisco State.
UP NEXT: Humboldt State will finish off its regular season this Thursday, November 4 with a 11:30am match at Chico State. The 'Jacks defeated the Wildcats 1-0 back on September 25 in a non-conference match-up in Arcata.
