Story Links

ARCATA, Calif---  Humboldt State Lumberjacks won their fourth game in a row this evening with a 77-66 win over the visiting Western Oregon Wolves.  The 4-0 start is the best start since the 2015-16 season for the 'Jacks.  Jaden Edwards paced the 'Jacks with 20 points and nine rebounds while Will Johnson added 19 points and eight assists.

FIRST HALF:
The Lumberjacks jumped out to an early 7-2 lead in the first four minutes of the game capped by a Will Johnson jumper off a Cam Timmons.  Western Oregon (1-4) went on a  11-4 run to take a 13-11 lead with 13 minutes left in the first half.  The Wolves increased their lead to 23-19 on a three pointer by Zach Moore.  HSU went on a run of its own and took a 33-29 lead on an Alonzo Washington jumper with a minute left in the half.  Western Oregon retook the lead on a trey by Tyreek Price.  A jumper by Will Johnson tied the game at 40-40 heading into the half.

SECOND HALF:
The Wolves took a 46-40 lead in the first five minutes of the second half.  Humboldt State followed that early second half run by the Wolves outscoring its opponents 12-6 to take a 52-45 lead. A lead the "Jacks would not relinquish. They increased that lead to 68-56 on a three by Jaden Edwards.  The Wolves cut the 'Jack lead to 75-66, but it was a little too late as HSU took the 77-66 victory.

QUOTES FROM THE COACH:
"I thought our execution on both ends of the floor in the last 8 minutes was the reason we were able to come out with the win tonight," said head coach Tae Norwood.  "We went on an 8-0 run during that span to give us a cushion and breathing room down the stretch."

"I thought Will and Jaden were efficient scoring the ball late in the game. They were responsible for more than half our team's total points," added Norwood.  " They both were able to get some easy baskets in transition which I think help them get into a rhythm as the game went on. Amari, also did a good job handling the late game pressure WOU applied. He has been stellar for us at the free throw line all year."

"Overall, I am proud of how our guys have competed to the end these last few games. Regardless of the situation, they continue show a lot of mental toughness and grit in times of adversity."

BEST START SINCE 2015-16:
Humboldt State's 4-0 start is the 'Jacks best start since 2015-16.  That season, the 'Jacks finished 21-9.

DISHING THE BALL:
Humboldt State dished out 16 assists this evening with eight coming from Will Johnson while Amari Green added five.

JOHNSON-EDWARDS DUO:
