‘Jacks Defense Stymies Stanislaus State in 66-53 Conference Road Win

TURLOCK, Calif---  Humboldt State's 25-4 run to begin this evening's game keyed the Lumberjacks' 66-53 conference road over Stanislaus State this evening in Turlock, Calif.  Bryce Mitchell paced the 'Jacks with a season high 19 points while three other players scored in double digits for Humboldt State (7-2, 1-2 CCAA).  Jaden Edwards recorded his sixth double-double with 13 points and a season high 17 rebounds. Amari Green added a season high 12 points for the victors.

QUOTES FROM THE COACH:  "To start the game, I thought our guys played with great energy and effort," said head coach Tae Norwood.  "Our half-court defense and press allowed us to dictate tempo and create transition opportunities. I thought that was the main reason we got off to the 25-4 to start at the beginning of the game."

On the play of Jaden Edwards---"Jaden plays with great tenacity," noted Norwood.  "He has a nose for the basketball. He finished with his 4th straight double-double. Last game he set a career high for points in a game (41) and tonight he set a career high for rebounds (19) in a game. His effort and energy are contagious."

On the performance of Bryce Mitchell this evening---"I am happy that Bryce was able to score the ball efficiently tonight," added Norwood.  "He led us in scoring (19) and knocked down 4 3's. His work ethic is tremendous and it was only a matter of time before he saw the fruits of his labor. We believe in him and need him to produce moving forward."

FIRST HALF:  Humboldt State (7-2, 1-2 CCAA) jumped out to a 25-4 lead in the first ten minutes of the game.  A Jaden Edwards' jumper with 8:16 left in the half increased the Lumberjacks' lead to 32-8.  Stanislaus State (2-6, 0-4 CCAA) finished the half on a 16-5 run to cut the HSU lead to 37-24 heading into the locker room.

SECOND HALF:  A Thomas Melonja three off a pass from Jaden Edwards increased the Lumberjacks' lead to 54-33 in the first six minutes of the second half.  Stanislaus State didn't go away as the hosts chipped away at the HSU lead and cut the deficit to 64-53 on a three by Tony Singleton with 1:52 left in regulation, but it was too late.  Amari Green's jumper made the final Humboldt State 66, Stanislaus State 53.

SEASON HIGHS:  Bryce Mitchell scored a season high 19 points to lead the way for the 'Jacks. He went seven-for-13 from the field including four-for-ten from three's and connected on his only attempt from the line. Mitchell also grabbed seven rebounds, blocked two shots and had an assist.  Amari Green scored a season high 12 points for the 'Jacks.

ANOTHER DOUBLE-DOUBLE:  After scoring 41 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in HSU's win over Simpson on Thursday night, Jaden Edwards had 13 points and a season high 17 rebounds for HSU this evening. This was his sixth double-double of the season and fourth in a row.

DEFENSE:  Humboldt State held the Warriors to just 37.9% shooting from the field including 25% from three-point land.  The 'Jacks forced 12 turnovers with six coming off of steals (two by AJ Sims).

48-29 ON THE BOARD:  The Lumberjacks owned a 48-29 advantage on the board this evening with Jaden Edwards' leading the way with 17 rebounds.  Amari Green, Bryce Mitchell and Cam Timmons each had seven rebounds with Austin Harris grabbing three.

UP NEXT:  Humboldt State will continue its three-game road trip next week. HSU will be at No. 7 Chico State (Dec. 18) and Sonoma State (Dec. 20) to end the calendar year.  Both games' tip-off is set for 7:30pm.  The 'Jacks will return home in the New Year on January 2 at 3pm when they entertain Sonoma State.
