Story Links

Humboldt State Lumberjacks saw their five-game winning streak snapped this evening by the visiting SF State Gators in Lumberjack Arena.  The Gators defeated the 'Jacks 84-80 in overtime despite Will Johnson's game high 20 points.  Three other 'Jacks scored in double digits in AJ Sims (16 points), Thomas Melonja (11 points) and Jaden Edwards with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

FIRST HALF:  A Sean Orr jumper gave the Gators a 15-10 lead just six minutes into the game.  A Will Johnson jumper capped a 9-4 run by the 'Jacks to tie the game at 19-19 with nine minutes left in the half.  Another Orr jumper gave SF State a 25-20 lead with just 4:46 to go in the first stanza.  The Gators increased their lead to 35-27 on a Travis August jumper at the 2:18 mark of the first half.  HSU cut the deficit to 35-31 on back to back jumpers by Jaden Edwards and Austin Harris as the hosts cut the deficit to 35-31 heading into the half.

SECOND HALF:  Humboldt State (5-1, 0-1 CCAA) started the second half with a 9-4 run to take a 40-39 lead capped by a Bryce Mitchell three off a pass from Jaden Edwards.  The 'Jacks increased their lead to 53-48 on a three by Thomas Melonja off a pass from Alonzo Washington with 11:33 on the clock.  HSU took a 59-50 lead on a three by AJ Sims off a pass from Washington with a little under ten minutes left in the half.  SF State (3-4, 1-0 CCAA) didn't go away as the Gators went on a 16-3 run of their own to take a 66-63 with five minutes left in regulation.  HSU came right back and took a 70-66 lead on a three by Sims off a pass from Thomas Nelson, but once again SF State came right back.  The Gators went on a 7-2 run capped by a jumper by Eche Okeke to take a 73-72 lead with just twenty seconds left in the game.  Two free throws by Bryce Mitchell to give HSU back the lead 74-73 with six seconds on the clock.  SF State drove the ball down the court and Toby Okwuokei was fouled and connected on one of his two free throws to send the game into overtime.

OVERTIME:  A three by Travis August gave the Gators a 77-74 to begin the overtime period.  Two made free throws by AJ Sims gave HSU a 78-77 lead with 2:04 to go in the overtime period. SF State took an 80-78 lead on a jumper by Toby Okwuokei, but HSU tied the game, 80-80, on its next possession with two made free throws by AJ Sims. The Gators finished the overtime period outscoring HSU 4-0 capped by two free throws by Okwuokei to give SF State the 84-80 victory.

FOUR IN DOUBLE DIGITS:  Will Johnson paced HSU with 20 points while dishing out nine assists, recording six steals and grabbing three rebounds.  AJ Sims added 16 points off the bench while Thomas Melonja had 11 points.  Jaded Edwards added 11 points.
