SAN RAFAEL, Calif.--- Playing in their first match since November 9, 2019, Humboldt State scored three unanswered goals to defeat the Dominican (Calif.) Penguins 3-1 this afternoon in San Rafael. Trailing 1-0, the Lumberjacks scored three goals including two in the final 23 minutes to take the 3-1 road victory.
Dominican, playing in its seventh match, took a 1-0 lead in the 22
nd when Brian Sanchez on a penalty kick. The Penguins (2-4-1) didn't hold that lead for long as five minutes later, Humboldt State tied the match at 1-1 when
Marco Silveira tied the match as his shot on goal attempt went into the lower right of net. The match remained 1-1 heading into halftime.
Thomas Augee scored his first goal in the Green and Gold in the 68
th minute to give HSU a 2-1 lead. He scored off a cross from
Devin Hauenstein which Augee kicked into the lower left of the net. HSU doubled its lead in the 75
th minute on a
Gou Nitta goal off an assist from
Marcus Abdel-Malek.
The Penguins had a chance to cut into the HSU lead, but Maxwell Ward's shot on goal attempt was stopped by
Adrian Gallardo in the 83
rd minute. Neither team had a shot on goal attempt in the final minutes of the match as the Lumberjacks took the 3-1 victory.
Jacob Cotton and
Adrian Gallardo each played a half in goal for the Lumberjacks. Cotton started the match, giving up one goal and recording two saves in the first 45 minutes. Gallardo played the final 45 minutes and had three saves.
Humboldt State will continue its Bay Area road trip tomorrow afternoon for a 1pm scrimmage with Holy Names University. The scrimmage is scheduled to start at 1pm at Wilder Field in Orinda, Calif. For more information on that match, go to
