ELLENSBURG, Wash.--- The Central Washington Wildcats (12-10) held off late inning rallies in both ends of this afternoon's doubleheader to take two games from the visiting Humboldt State Lumberjacks, 8-5 and 12-10. In game one, the duo of
Micaela Harris and
JoAna Mullins went a combined four-for-seven, driving in two runs and scoring once. Then in the night cap, four Lumberjacks had multiple-hit games paced by the duo of
Izzy Starr and
Haley Suter. Starr went four-for-four with four runs scored and a run batted in while Suter went two-for-four with four runs batted in and a run scored.
GAME ONE: Central Washington scored two runs in four of the seven innings to key its 8-5 win over the visiting Lumberjacks in game one. The Wildcats took a 2-0 lead in their half of the first inning capped by a two-out run scoring single by Alyssa Benthagen.
Humboldt State (8-5) cut the deficit in half in its half of the second inning.
Haley Suter had a lead-off walk, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by
JoAna Mullins. She advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a ground out by
Tessa Poirier.
Central Washington came back with two more runs of its own in its frame of the second. The scoring was capped by a two-out run scoring by Theresa Moyle. The hosts added two more runs in the third to take a 6-1 lead.
The Lumberjacks cut the Wildcat lead to 6-4 with a three-run fifth.
Hollee Travao had a lead-off triple and scored on a single by
Vanessa Saltos.
Micaela Harris tripled home Saltos for HSU's second run on the inning. Harris scored on a single by
Ava Hand as HSU's deficit was down to two (6-4).
The Wildcats came right back with two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Alee Cruz's two-run one-out single scored Alycia Bannan and Gracee Dwyer to increase CWU's lead to 8-4.
HSU kept on battling in its last at bat.
Danica Grier reached on a one-out fielder's choice. She went to third with two outs on a wild pitch.
Haley Suter walked to place runners on first and third for Mullins with two outs. Mullins drove in Grier with a single up the middle. Wildcat pitcher, Lexie Strasser, induced the final 'Jack batter to ground out to third to preserve the 7-5 Wildcat victory.
Emily McAdams (3-3) picked up the loss in the start for the Lumberjacks. Hand pitched the final four innings of relief. She gave up two hits and two runs while striking out seven and walking one. Harris and Mullins went a combined four-for-seven with two runs batted in and a run scored.
GAME TWO: The hosts jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first inning. They scored five runs on just four hits keyed by a one-out two-run single by Alycia Bannan. The Lumberjacks came right back with a three-run second inning.
Izzy Starr had a lead-off single, went to second on a one-out single by
JoAna Mullins. She scored on a single by
Katelyn Dendas. Mullins scored on a sacrifice fly by
Vanessa Saltos. With two outs, Dendas scored when
Micaela Harris reached on a fielding error to cut CWU's lead to 5-3.
Central Washington increased its lead to 8-3 with a three-run second of its own. The key hit was a two-run double by Sydney Brown. Starr's two-out solo home run over the center field fence made it 8-4 CWU in the top of the third inning. CWU scored a run of its own on a two-out triple by Bannan which brought in Theresa Moyle to give the hosts a 9-4 lead after three complete innings.
The Lumberjacks did not go away as they chipped away at the deficit. With one out in the top of the fourth, Dendas singled went to second when
Jenna Sobrero reached on an error. Harris drove home both 'Jacks on a two-out single to left field. HSU cut CWU's lead to 9-7 in the fifth inning. Back to back doubles by Starr and
Haley Suter scored the Lumberjacks' seventh run of the game.
Central Washington scored three important insurance runs to take a 12-7 lead after six innings with a three-run sixth innings. HSU made it interesting in its last at bat.
Danica Grier had a lead-off walk and went to third on a double by Starr. With the count 2-1, Suter hit a three-run home run over the left center field fence to cut the Wildcat lead to just two (12-10). Sobrero drew a two-out walk, but CWU reliever Lexie Strasser induced the final out of the game on a ground out to third base to preserve the Wildcat 12-10 victory.
Four 'Jack batters had multiple-hit games in Starr, Suter, Mullins and Dendas. Starr went four-for-four with a run batted in and four runs scored. Suter went two-for-four with four runs batted in and a run scored. The duo of Mullins and Dendas went a combined four-for-eight with a run batted in and three runs scored.
Gaige Garcia (1-2) suffered the loss in the start for HSU.
The two teams will finish off the five-game series tomorrow morning with a 9am single seven-inning game in Ellensburg, Wash. HSU will then be off until April 25 for a ten-game road trip in the Bay Area from April 25 to May 1 against Academy of Art and Dominican (Calif.).
