PORTLAND, Ore..--- Humboldt State outscored Warner Pacific 54-42 in the second half, but it wasn't enough as the Knights defeated their guests 95-91.
Bryce Mitchell paced the Lumberjacks with a game high 28 points. Three other players scored in double digits for Humboldt State in
Amari Green and
AJ Sims each with 14 points while
Victor Mijas chipped in 11 points.
The Lumberjacks jumped out to a 10-2 early first half lead capped by back to back jumpers by Mijas and Mitchell. Warner Pacific outscored the 'Jacks 16-6 in the next five minutes to take a 18-16 lead.
A three by Green cut Warner Pacific's lead to 27-26 with 6:08 left in the half, but the Knights finished the half outscoring their guests 26-11 to take a 53-37 lead into the locker room.
A three by Sims off an assist from Green cut the Knight lead to single digits, 66-57, nine minutes into the second half. WPU increased its lead back to double digits, 76-65, on a free throw by Christian Hodge at the 7:34 mark.
Warner Pacific increased its lead to 85-72 on a three-point play by Miles Brown with just 5:17 left in regulation.
Humboldt State didn't go away as the 'Jacks went on a 14-1 run capped by a Green jumper off an assist from
Caleb Giordano to cut the deficit to 87-86 at the 2:10 mark of the second half. Warner Pacific scored the next five points to take a 91-86 lead. A made throw by Green cut the WPU lead to 9, but Isaac Etter went two-for-two from the line to seal the Knight win. A jumper by Sims made the final WPU 95-91.
Mitchell went 10-for-17 from the field including five-for-nine from three-point land for the 'Jacks this evening. He also grabbed six rebounds and went three-for-three from the line. Green finished with 14 points and dished out five assists. HSU had 15 assists with Green's five leading the way and Sims dishing out three and Mijas and
Noah Viera each having two assists.
The Lumberjacks out-rebounded Warner Pacific 44-28 led by Mitchell and Viera each with six rebounds. They shot 17-for-22 from the line besides Mitchell's three-for-three performance from the line, Sims went five-for-six while
Gabrys Sadaunykas went three-for-four.
HSU will finish off its three-game road trip tomorrow evening in Ashland, Ore., for a 6pm scheduled game with Southern Oregon University.
