Lumberjacks Take Night Cap 13-3 to Earn Split of Today’s Doubleheader

ELLENSBURG, Wash.---  Humboldt State belted out 13 runs on 14 hits in game two of today's doubleheader with Central Washington in Ellensburg, Wash., as the Lumberjacks won the night cap 13-3 in five innings.  Five different 'Jacks had multiple-hit games paced by Micaela Harris' four-for-four game.  Humboldt State lost the opener 9-1 in five innings. 
 
GAME ONE:  Humboldt State took the early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning of the series opener.  Danica Grier had a two-out double to left center and scored when Izzy Starr reached on a fielding error by the Wildcats.
 
Central Washington took a 6-1 lead after its half of the first inning.  The Wildcats scored six runs on seven hits keyed by a two-out three-run home run by Gracee Dwyer to left field.  Three batters later, CWU added its sixth run of the inning on a run scoring single by Allie Thiessen. 
 
The hosts increased its lead to 9-1 with a three-run second inning.  Dwyer had the big hit once again in the second, this time on a one-out two-run double to left center.  She finished the game, two-for-three with five runs batted in and a run scored.
 
The Lumberjacks managed just four hits off of Wildcat starter, Samantha Stenfield (3-3).  Those three came off the bats of Micaela Harris, Vanessa Saltos, Ava Hand and Grier. 
 
Emily McAdams (3-2) took the loss in the start for HSU while Hand finished the game.  Hand pitched 2.2 scoreless innings of relief, giving up no hits while striking out four and walking two.
 
GAME TWO:  Harris had a lead-off double to begin the game and stole third. She scored when Grier reached on a fielder's choice sacrifice bunt to give HSU a 1-0 lead.  Later in the inning, Grier scored on a two-out single by Haley Suter as the 'Jacks took a 2-0 lead.
 
Central Washington (10-10) cut the Lumberjacks' lead in half on a two-out single by Dwyer in the bottom of the second inning. 
 
The Lumberjacks increased their lead to 5-1 with a three-run third inning.  Grier had a lead-off walk and scored on a two-run home run by Starr.  Suter followed Starr's home run with a double and scored on a suicide squeeze bunt by Hollee Travao
 
Humboldt State (8-3) broke the game open with a seven-run fourth inning to take a 12-1 lead.  HSU scored seven runs on seven hits to take the double-digit lead.  Grier single scored Harris with the inning's first run.  Two batters later, Suter drove in McAdams and Grier with a two-run single.  Later in the innings, Tessa Poirier had a two-out two-run single which scored Suter and Starr.  The Lumberjacks' final two runs came on a two-out two-run double by Harris which brought in Anna Brondos and JoAna Mullins to give HSU a 12-1 lead.
 
The Wildcats cut the deficit to 12-3 with a two-run fourth inning.  HSU added an insurance run on a two-out single by Mullins which brought in Grier after she reached on a lead-off double. 
 
Gaige Garcia (1-1) picked up her first win as a Lumberjack.  She pitched five innings, giving up six hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out three and walking one. 
Harris paced HSU's hitting attack going four-for-four with two runs batted in and two runs scored.  Of those four hits, two were doubles while she stole a base. Suter went three-for-four with three runs batted and scored twice. She also had a double.  Grier scored four runs in the night cap for the visitors, while driving in two runs and went two-for-three of which one of two hits was a double.  Starr had two hits with a two-run home run while Mullins added two hits for the 'Jacks.
 
The two teams will continue the five-game series tomorrow afternoon with another 1pm starting doubleheader at Gary & Bobbi Frederick Field in Ellensburg.  The series will conclude with a 9am starting seven-inning game this Sunday.
