Defense Keys Lumberjacks’ Split on Day One

ROHNERT PARK, Calif---  In thanks to their stellar defense, the Humboldt State Lumberjacks finished the day 1-1 capped by a four-set win (25-20, 23-25, 25-21, 25-13) win over the Dominican Penguins.  Carla Crespo had a match high 25 digs to go with her five service to key the win by the 'Jacks.  In their first match, Humboldt State lost the first match of the classic in four sets (23-25, 25-21, 21-25, 15-25) to Chico State this morning.  Lenox Loving had 10 kills and Hannah Cantrell recorded eight total blocks to lead HSU against the Wildcats.
 
FIRST SET:  Humboldt State took a 6-4 lead in the first set capped by a Lenox Loving kill off an assist from Riley White.  Chico State took a 11-10 lead on a kill by Makaela Keeve.  The Lumberjacks scored three of the next five points to take a 14-12 lead.  The Wildcats came back and took an 18-16 lead, but HSU scored the next six points keyed by kills by Anna Hopsodar, Katie Nall and Riley White to take a 22-18 lead.  Chico State scored the next two points to cut the HSU lead to 22-20, but a block by Hannah Cantrell made it 23-20 'Jacks.  The Wildcats finished off the set scoring the final five points to take the set 25-23.
 
SECOND SET:  The second set was even until the 'Jacks took a 13-7 lead.  Chico State cut HSU's lead to 16-11, but a kill by Loving of a pass from Nall gave HSU a 17-12 lead, but the Wildcats wouldn't go away.  The Wildcats cut the 'Jack lead to 19-18, but HSU scored the next three points to take a 22-18 lead.  Once again, Chico State cut HSU's lead to two (22-20).  HSU scored three of the set's final four points capped by a Carla Crespo service ace to give the 'Jacks the set 25-21 and even the score at 1-1.
 
THIRD SET;  In the third set, HSU took a 12-8 lead capped by back to back kills from Hopsodar and Cantrell.  Chico State scored the three points to cut the Lumberjacks' lead to 12-11.  HSU took a 15-12 lead on another ace by Crespo.  The Wildcats cut HSU's lead to 17-16, but a kill by Lindsey McLaughlin gave HSU a 18-16 lead.  Chico State scored the next four points to take a 20-18 lead.  A kill by Hopsodar off a pass from White started a three-point scoring surge by HSU as the 'Jacks took a 21-20 lead.  The Wildcats took the set, 25-21, as they scored the set's final five points as they took a 2-1 lead in the match.
 
FOURTH SET:  The Wildcats (4-1) came out on fire in the fourth set to take a 12-1 lead.  A kill by Cantrell cut Chico's lead to 12-3.  They increased their lead to 18-4, but HSU scored five points capped by back to back blocks by Malia Coyle and Cantrell.  Chico State Wildcats' lead went back to double digits as they took a 21-9 lead and never looked back as they took the set 25-15 and the match, 3-1.
 
LEADERS VERSUS CHICO STATE:  HSU's had four players with at least seven kills in its match versus Chico State paced by Lenox Loving's 10 kills.  Three other players had seven in Hannah Cantrell, Anna Hopsodar and Lindsey McLaughlinRiley Tishlarich had 15 assists while Riley White added 14.  McLaughlin recorded three service aces and Carla Crespo added two.  Crespo paced the 'Jacks with 13 digs and Cantrell had a team high eight total blocks
 
FIRST SET:  Humboldt State took a 9-3 lead in the first set capped by back to back kills by McLaughlin and Malia Coyle.  The 'Jacks increased their lead to 16-9, but Dominican came back and cut the HSU lead to 19-18.  HSU came right back with three straight points started by back to back kills by Loving and Hopsodar.  The 'Jacks finished the set out scoring four of the final six points including two on kills by Coyle and Loving to take the set 25-20.
 
SET TWO:  Dominican (0-6) took an early 10-7 lead in the second set.  The Lumberjacks took a 19-17 lead keyed by a kill by McLaughlin, but the Penguins scored four of the next five points to take a 21-20 lead.  HSU came right back capped by a block by Cantrell to take a 22-21 lead, but Dominican finished the set taking four of the final five points to take the set 25-23.  With the win, Dominican evened the match at 1-1.
 
SET THREE:  The third set was back and forth with the 'Jacks taking a 10-6 lead on a kill by Elyse McKinney.  The 'Jacks increased their lead to 15-11 on back to back kills by Katie Nall and Loving.  The 'Jacks took six of the next nine points to take a 21-14 lead.  Dominican cut the 'Jack lead to 21-17, but HSU finished set out scoring four of the final eight points to take the set 25-21 capped by back to back kills by McKinney and Nall.  With the win, HSU took a 2-1 lead in the match.
 
SET FOUR:  Dominican took a 6-3 lead in the next set but the 'Jacks came right back and scored six of the next nine points to tie the match at 9-9.  Capped by a Carla Crespo service ace, HSU scored twelve of the next fourteen points to take a commanding 21-11 lead.  HSU took the set 25-13 and the match 3-1.
 
LEADERS VERSUS DOMINICAN:  Lenox Loving had 16 digs while Katie Nall had 10.  Riley Tishlarich had a team high 25 assists while Riley White had 23.  Carla Crespo had five of HSU's 11 service aces while Tishlarich and White each had two.  Crespo had a team high 25 digs while Loving had 10 to give her a double-double.  Hannah Cantrell led HSU with three total blocks. 
 
TOMORROW:  Humboldt State will continue its play in the Seawolf/Gator Classic tomorrow morning at 10am when the 'Jacks face Holy Names at 10am.  They will conclude their play in the classic at 5pm against Academy of Art.
