ROHNERT PARK, Calif--- Humboldt State finished its play in the Seawolf/Gator Classic with a four-set win (25-21, 21-25, 25-10, 25-19) over the Academy of Art Urban Knights to finish the weekend 2-2.
Lenox Loving paced HSU with her third straight double double with a match high 23 kills and 13 digs. HSU lost its first set of the day in four (26-24, 19-25, 24-26, 25-17) despite Loving's 10 klils and 18 digs.
VERSUS HOLY NAMES
FIRST SET: Humboldt State took the first set against the Hawks 26-24. The set was evenly played with no team taking more than a two-point lead. A kill by
Hannah Cantrell gave HSU a 23-21 lead, but three consecutive kills by the Hawks gave Holy Names a 24-23. The 'Jacks finished out the set taking the final three points capped by combined blocks by
Lenox Loving and
Lindsey McLaughlin and
Malia Coyle and McLaughln.
SECOND SET: Holy Names (2-4) took the second set 25-19 as the Hawks jumped out to a 18-9 lead. The Lumberjacks cut the deficit to 23-17 on a combined block by Cantrell and
Elyse McKinney. A kill by
Anna Hopsodar cut Holy Names' lead to 24-19, but the Hawks finished the set out on a kill by Ayanna Barham as they tied the match at 1-1.
THIRD SET; The Lumberjacks came out on fire in the third set as they took a 20-9 lead. Holy Names did not cave in as they tied the set at 23-23. A kill by Cantrell gave HSU a 24-23 lad, but the Hawks took three of the final four points to take the set 26-24. After the set three win, HNU took a 2-1 advantage in the match.
FOURTH SET: Holy Names came out of the break in set four and took a 10-4 lead. A combined block by Cantrell and McKinney cut the HNU lead to 10-7. The 'Jacks cut the Hawk lead to just two (13-11) on a service ace by
Macy Thomas, but HNU scored nine of the next eleven points to take a 22-13 lead. A kill by
Elyse McKinney made it 23-17 HNU. The Hawks finished the set and match off taking two of the final three points to take the set 25-17 and the match 3-1.
LEADERS VERSUS HOLY NAMES: HSU had three players in double digits in kills in
Hannah Cantrell (14),
Lindsey McLaughlin (11) and
Lenox Loving (10).
Riley Tishlarich recorded 25 assists while
Riley White added 17.
Carla Crespo had a team high 21 digs while Loving added 18 and Tishlarich 11. McLaughlin and Cantrell each had five total blocks.
FIRST SET: Back to back kills by
Katie Nall and
Lenox Loving gave HSU a 12-8 lead in the first set. Academy of Art scored six of the next seven points to take a 14-13 lead. HSU came right back and took a 15-14 lead on a combined block by Lindey McLaughlin and
Malia Coyle. Once again, the Urban Knights and took a 17-16 lead, but the 'Jacks scored the next three points keyed by kills by McLaughlin and Coyle. A service ace by
Riley Tishlarich gave HSU a 22-19 lead. The Urban Knights scored the next point and the 'Jacks finished the set off scoring three of the final four points including the final two on back to back kills by
Hannah Cantrell and Loving as HSU took the set 25-21.
SECOND SET: The Lumberjacks took a 10-6 lead on a service ace by Loving. The Urban Knights scored seven of the next eight points to take a 13-11 lead. HSU took a 14-13 lead on a kill by Tishlarich. Academy of Art went on a rally and took a 21-16 lead, but HSU cut the lead to 24-21 but the Urban Knights took the set 25-21 and evened the match at 1-1.
THIRD SET: Humboldt State came out on fire in the next set and took a 11-3 lead capped by a
Carla Crespo service ace and McLaughlin kill. Another kill by McLaughlin increased the Lumberjacks' lead to 18-4 and HSU didn't look back as the 'Jacks took the set 25-20 to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
FOURTH SET: The fourth set was even until HSU took a 17-11 lead on three consecutive kills by Loving. The Urban Knights cut the deficit to 21-17. HSU finished the set and match off taking four of the final six points capped by a kill by Nall. Humboldt State won the set 25-19 and the match 3-1.
LEADERS VERSUS ACADEMY OF ART: Lenox Loving had 23 kills and 13 digs while she added two service aces and two blocks.
Riley Tishlarich had 30 assists while
Riley White chipped in 19 assists.
Carla Crespo added 16 digs. HSU recorded 12 service aces besides White's four, Lindsay McLaughlin added three and Crespo and Loving each had two while Tishlarich had one. The 'Jacks hit .362 led by Loving's .512 hitting percentage.
UP NEXT: Humboldt State will open up CCAA play next week in Los Angeles. The 'Jacks will face Cal State Los Angeles on Sept. 17 at 4pm and Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sept. 18 at noon.
