LOS ANGELES, Calif--- Humboldt State's volleyball team opened up its California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) season with a four-set loss to the Cal State Los Angeles Golden Eagles (6-3, 1-0 CCAA) this afternoon at University Gym on the campus of Cal State Los Angeles.
Lindsey McLaughlin and
Carla Crespo paced the 'Jacks respectively with their 13 kills and 30 digs.
FIRST SET: Cal State Los Angeles, who is receiving votes in this week's AVCA/NCAA DivisionII Poll, took an early 9-5 lead in the first set. The 'Jacks scored five of the next six points to take the match at 10-10 capped by a kill by
Anna Hopsodar. The Golden Eagles took a 15-12 lead on a kill by Karla Santos and increased its lead to 21-15. They closed out the set capped by a Lumberjack service error to take the first set 25-18.
SECOND SET: The second set was even until HSU took a 19-15 lead on a service ace by
Lenox Loving. The Golden Eagles took a 23-22 lead on a hitting error by the Lumberjacks. HSU took the nexttwo points, but the hosts tied the match at 24-24 on a kill by Santos. HSU scored the final two points including one on a kill by McLaughlin on a assist from
Riley Tishlarich to take the set 26-24 and even the match at 1-1.
THIRD SET: The hosts jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the third set, but HSU cut the lead to 10-8 on back to back kills by McLaughlin one off an assist from Tishlarich and the other from
Riley White. The Goldne Eagles took a 23-16 lead on a kill by Alejandra Megron. Back to back kills by McLaughlin and Loving cut the deficit to 23-19, but CSULA finished the set off scoring the next two points 25-19 to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
FOURTH SET: Once again, Cal State Los Angeles took a 7-2 lead early in the fourth set. Humboldt State cut the CSULA lead to 7-5 on back to back hitting errors by the hosts. Cal State Los Angeles scored 15 of the next 20 points to take a 22-12 lead. A combined block by
Malia Coyle and
Hannah Cantrell stopped the run by the Golden Eagles, but the hosts took three of the final six points to take the set 25-15 and the match 3-1.
LEADERS: Lindsay McLaughlin had a team high 13 kills with one error in 26 attempts for a .462 hitting percentage. She added three blocks as did
Hannah Cantrell and
Malia Coyle.
Carla Crespo had a career high 30 digs for the 'Jacks with
Lenox Loving recorded two service aces.
Riley Tishlarich had 18 assists while
Riley White added 13.
UP NEXT: Humboldt State (2-3,0-1 CCAA) will continue its road trip tomorrow afternoon at noon when the 'Jacks face Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson. The Toros lost in five to Sonoma State (25-22, 19-25, 18-25, 25-21, 16-18).
