Lumberjacks Defeat the Griffins and the Weather in 2-0 Season Opening Victory

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah--- After starting its match 75 minutes after its scheduled start and going through a thirty-minute lightning delay in the second half, Humboldt State Lumberjacks defeated the hosts, Westminster Griffins, 1-0, this evening at Dumke Field in Salt Lake City, Utah.  Marco Silveira scored on a ball on from Gou Nitta in the 65th minute in what proved to be the game-winner.  Adrian Gallardo had five saves in goal for the Lumberjacks (1-0).
 
FIRST HALF:  Westminster (0-1) out-shot the Lumberjacks 11-2 in the first half including 3-1 in shot in goal attempts.  The Griffins first shot on goal attempt came in the sixth minute when Adrian Gallardo recorded his first of five saves by stopping Luke Merrill's shot on goal attempt.  The 'Jacks' only shot on goal attempt came less than a minute later when Alejandro Lopez's shot on goal attempt was stopped by Ian Rose.  Gallardo stopped another Griffin shot attempt in the 30th minute and the last one came in the 41st minute as Merrill's attempt was stopped by the Lumberjack goalie.  That ended the half with the match scoreless.
 
SECOND HALF:  The second half was different with HSU controlling the half with a 6-3 shot attempt advantage.  The visitors also had a 3-2 shot on goal attempt advantage.  HSU came out of the 15-mintue break when Yushi Kato's attempt was stopped by Rose.  In the 65th minute, Marco Silveira gave the 'Jacks a 1-0 lead off a ball from Nicolas Herrera Land.  Westminster had a chance to tie the match at 1-1, when Gallardo recorded another save in the 70th minute on a shot on goal attempt by Carlos Becerra-Gomez.  The 'Jacks doubled their lead as Daniel Adeyeye connected on a ball from Silveira in the 82nd minute.  With less than two minutes left in the match, Gallardo recorded his fifth save and sealed the 2-0 shutout victory for Humboldt State.
 
SILVEIRA:  With his goal and assist this evening, Marco Silveira has scored nine goals and recorded 16 assists during his collegiate career in the Green and Gold. Silveira's 16 assists is currently fifth on the Lumberjack all-time career assists list.
 
GALLARDO IN GOAL:  Adrian Gallardo recorded four saves en route to the shutout in goal for the Lumberjacks this evening.  Last season, Gallardo along with Jacob Cotton combined on four shutouts including back to back season ending shutouts at Menlo (0-0 and 2-0).
 
FIRST: Both Daniel Adeyeye and Nicolas Herrera Land recorded their collegiate firsts this evening.  Herrera Land recorded his first assist as a Lumberjack when he assisted on Marco Silveira's goal in the 65th minute. With eight minutes left in regulation, Adeyeye recorded his first collegiate goal on a ball from Silveira in what sealed the match for the 'Jacks.
 
SEASON OPENERS:  Humboldt State is 6-3 in its season openers in the last nine years under ninth-year head coach Fred Jungemann. The Lumberjacks have won their last four-season openers in a row. 
 
UP NEXT:  The Lumberjacks will return to the pitch this Saturday, September 4 at 4:30pm (MT) when they take on Northwest Nazarene in Salt Lake City, Utah, at Dumke Field on the campus of Westminster College. The Nighthawks defeated SF State 3-1 earlier this evening.
 
HOME OPENER:  Humboldt State will have its home opener on Friday, September 17 at 3pm, when the Lumberjacks host Simpson in a non-conference match-up at College Creek Field.
