ARCATA, Calif.--- In their first match at College Creek Field, the Humboldt State Lumberjacks played to a scoreless tie with the visiting Dominican Penguins (0-0-1) in both team's 2021 regular season home opener.
Alexis Aguilar recorded six saves en route to the shutout for the Lumberjacks.
QUOTES FROM THE COACH: "It was a good battle today between two teams who worked really hard and wanted to win," said head coach
Grant Landy. "I thought our mentality was on point, something we have been working on in the first couple of weeks of the season. "
"We need to continue to work on our execution in the final third of the field to create more goal scoring chances," added Landy. "We had some really good ideas and creative combination play but that final pass or shot just wasn't there for us today."
FIRST HALF: Humboldt State (0-0-1) outshot the Penguins 4-1 in the first including recording the only shot on goal attempt. That shot on goal attempt came in the 30
th minute when
Emma McChristie's shot was stopped by the Penguins' Jaqueline Castano. Dominican had a chance to break the tie in the final seconds but Eryn Tufts shot sailed wide left.
SECOND HALF: The second half was controlled by Dominican as the visitors out-shot the 'Jacks 8-2 with four shot on goal attempts. Aguilar made her first save of the half in the 61
st minute stopping Danielle Gonzalez' shot. Then five minutes later, Aguilar stopped Tanya Bills' chance to give the Penguins the lead. McChristie had another chance to give HSU the lead, but were shot sailed wide right. Aguilar's final save came with eight minutes left when she stopped Kamryn Sorrick's shot on goal attempt as the match went into the overtime period.
OVERTIME: In the first overtime, HSU had the only shot on goal attempt in the 93
rd minute when
Baylee Groom's shot was stopped by Cattano to send the match into the second overtime period. Aguilar made two key saves including one in the 102
nd to keep the match scoreless. Groom had a chance to be the hero for the 'Jacks in the 103
rd minute but her shot sailed high.
