‘Jacks Drops Heartbreaking Double Overtime Thriller to Broncos

ARCATA, Calif—For the second game in their last four games, Humboldt State had to play extra periods to decide the outcome of its game. This time the Lumberjacks fell 89-80 in double overtime to the visiting Cal Poly Pomona Broncos this evening at Lumberjack Arena.  Kaz Parks scored a season high 21 points to lead the way for the 'Jacks while Madison Parry chipped in 19 points and Jadence Clifton added 10 points.
 
FIRST QUARTER:  Cal Poly Pomona (4-8, 3-5 CCAA) jumped out to a 9-3 early lead to begin the first quarter.  The 'Jacks finished the last seven minutes outscoring their guests 14-7 to take a 17-16 lead capped by a Jadence Clifton three off a pass from Sharon Roldan.
 
SECOND QUARTER:  A Madison Parry jumper off a pass from Jadence Clifton increased the HSU lead to 21-16 in the first two minutes of the second quarter.  Cal Poly Pomona went on a 13-7 run to take a 29-28 lead with two minutes left in the half.  A three by Julia Iman off a pass from Samantha Caires capped a mini-5-0 run by the 'Jacks as they took a 33-29 lead, but a lay-up by Chynna Cochran cut HSU's lead to 33-31 heading into the locker room.
 
THIRD QUARTER:  Humboldt State (4-7, 3-4 CCAA) increased its lead to 40-34 on a three by Kaz Parks off a pass from Jaden Clifton just two minutes into the second half.  A jumper by Chynna Cochran cut the 'Jack lead to 42-42 with four minutes left in the third period.  A three by Madison Parry off a pass from Citlaly Davalos increased HSU's lead to 45-41.  The visitors scored the next five points to take a 46-45 lead on a three by Breanna Ho heading into the final quarter.
 
FOURTH QUARTER:  CPP increased its lead to 50-45 to begin the fourth quarter.  A jumper by Citlaly Davalos off a pass from Kaz Parks capped a 10-3 run by the 'Jacks as they took a 55-53 lead.  The Broncos came right back and increased their lead to 62-57 with 1:32 left on a lay-up by Jayda Villareal.  A three by Ashley Peralta off a pass from Davalos gave HSU a 64-63 lead with just 18 seconds left in regulation.  CPP was fouled with seconds left and the Broncos went one-for-two from the line to send the game into overtime, 64-64.
 
FIRST OVERTIME:  An old-fashioned three-point play by Kaz Parks gave the 'Jacks a 67-65 lead just one minute into the overtime period. A jumper by Breanne Ha capped a 6-2 run by the visitors as they took a 71-69 lead with less than a minute to go.  HSU came right back and retook the lead, 73-71, on a jumper by Citlaly Davalos.  CPP was fouled with less a second left in the first overtime period and Jayda Villareal made both free throws to send the game into the second overtime tied at 73-73.
 
SECOND OVERTIME:  Samantha Caires gave HSU a brief 77-75 lead in the first minute of the second overtime period which was the last time the 'Jacks held the lead.  Cal Poly Pomona went on a 9-3 run to take an 86-78 lead with just 65 seconds on the clock.  Ashley Peralta's two free throws cut the Broncos' lead to 86-80, but it was a little too late as CPP took the 89-80 double overtime thriller.
 
FROM THREE:  Kaz Parks went five-for-ten from beyond the arc to key her career high 21 points this evening for the 'Jacks.  HSU as a team made 12 of its 31 attempts from beyond the arc. Besides Parks' five, Madison Parry made three, Jadence Clifton two and Ashley Peralta and Julia Iman each one. 
 
SEASON HIGH:  Freshman Jadence Clifton scored a season high 10 points in 36 minutes for the Lumberjacks. Clifton dished out six assists with just one turnover while recording a steal and grabbing a rebound.
 
18 TURNOVERS:  Humboldt State forced 18 turnovers by the Broncos including nine by seals.  Kaz Parks, Citlaly Davalos and Sharon Roldan each had two steals while Jadence Clifton, Ashley Peralta and Julia Iman each had one.
 
UP NEXT:  The 'Jacks will be on the road for their next two games. This Thursday, January 20, HSU will be in Hayward, Calif., for a 5:30pm tip-off with Cal State East Bay.  HSU will travel to Carson, Calif., for a 1pm tip-off with Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday, January 22.
