‘Jacks Snap Streak With 67-63 Road Win

HAYWARD, Calif—The visiting Humboldt State Lumberjacks snapped their two-game losing streak with a 67-63 road win over Cal State East Bay this evening in Hayward, Calif.  Jaden Edwards paced the 'Jacks with his seventh double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds. AJ Sims added 13 points off the bench while Cam Timmons scored 11 points and Amari Green chipped in 10 points for the victors.
 
FIRST HALF:  Humboldt State (9-6, 3-6 CCAA) jumped out to an early 12-3 lead capped by an Amari Green jumper in the first three minutes of the game.  A three by Bryce Mitchell off a pass from Thomas Melonja increased HSU's lead to double digits (15-5) at the 15:39 mark of the first half.  Cal State East Bay cut the Lumberjacks' lead to 19-10 on a Zack Perlstein jumper in the net two minutes.  The 'Jacks increased its lead to 22-10 on an old-fashioned three-point play by Austin Harris.  A Justin Vigil jumper capped a 14-5 run by the hosts to cut the 'Jack lead to 27-24 with just 4:11 left in the first stanza.  HSU finished the half outscoring its hosts 10-4 to take a 37-29 lead into the locker room. 
 
SECOND HALF:  Cal State East Bay (3-11, 1-7 CCAA) outscored the 'Jacks 9-5 in the first five minutes of the new half to cut the guests' lead to 42-38. A three by AJ Sims off a pass from Jaden Edwards increased the Lumberjacks' lead to 47-38. A three by Kaito Williams capped a 13-0 run by the Pioneers as they took a 51-47 lead with nine minutes to go in regulation.  HSU followed that with a 5-0 run of its own to take a 52-51 lead on a lay-up from Cam Timmons with 6:41 on the clock. Two free throws by Justin Vigil gave the hosts a 55-52 lead, but the 'Jacks didn't go away.  A three by Edwards off a pass from Amari Green capped a 7-0 run by the 'Jacks as they took a 59-55 lead with just 3:51 to go in the game.  A three by Zack Perlstein cut the Pioneer deficit to just one (59-58) at the 3:21 mark on the hosts' next possession.  HSU missed its shot to increase its lead and the Pioneers took a 60-59 lead on their next possession with a little over two minutes left in regulation.  The 'Jacks were fouled on their next possession and Green made the Pioneers pay as he gave HSU a 61-60 lead.
 
Cal State East Bay's DJ Sanders was fouled on the Pioneers' next possession and he went one-for-two from the line to tie the game at 61-61.  An AJ Sims' lay-up and a dunk by Edwards off assists from Timmons gave HSU a 65-61 lead with just 56 seconds on the clock.  Perlstein cut the Pioneer deficit to 65-63 on its next possession, but two free throws by Green sealed the 67-63 win for the 'Jacks.
 
NUMBER SEVEN:  Jaden Edwards recorded his seventh double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Edwards went seven-for-12 from the field and three-for-five from beyond the arc.  He also had two assists and one steal.    
 
THREE MORE IN DOUBLE DIGITS:  Besides Jaden Edwards scoring in double digits, AJ Sims, Cam Timmons and Amari Green all scored in double figures for HSU.  Sims scored 13 points off the bench while Timmons added 11 points and Green chipped in 10 points.
 
13/10:  Humboldt State dished out 13 assists and had just 10 turnovers.  Cam Timmons, Amari Green and Thomas Melonja each had three assists.  Jaden Edwards and AJ Sims each had two assists. 
 
PERFECT FROM THE LINE:  Amari Green was a perfect six-for-six from the charity stripe tonight including going four-for-four in the final two minutes.  For the season, Green is shooting 84.4% from the line going 27-for-32 from the charity stripe.  His six made free throws tonight tied his career high for made in a game. 
 
UP NEXT:  The 'Jacks will continue their road trip this Saturday, January 22 for a 3pm CCAA game with Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson, Calif.  The Toros defeated Sonoma State 81-65 this evening in Carson.
