‘Jacks Finish Weekend 2-0 After Stellar Defensive Performance

CARSON, Calif—Humboldt finished its road trip 2-0 after defeating the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros (8-7, 5-4 CCAA) 66-45 this afternoon in the Torodome in Carson, Calif.  The 45 points were the least amount of points allowed by the 'Jacks since a 78-40 non-conference win over Notre Dame de Namur on December 19, 2009.  Amari Green paced the 'Jacks with 14 points while Jaden Edwards recorded his eighth double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. 
 
FIRST HALF:  The Toros took an early 9-5 lead in the first seven minutes of the game on a Colten Kresl lay-up.  An Austin Harris lay-up capped an 8-1 run by the 'Jacks as they took a 13-10 lead.  The Lumberjacks increased their lead to 28-16 with 1:44 left in the half on a lay-up by Jaden Edwards off a pass from Thomas Nelson.  Cal State Dominguez Hills cut its deficit to 29-20 on a Colten Kresl jumper with 44 seconds to go in the half. A  jumper by Amari Green gave the 'Jacks a 31-20 lead heading into the locker room. 
 
SECOND HALF:  Humboldt (10-6, 4-6 CCAA) kept its run going in the second half as the 'Jacks took a 44-23 lead on a Cam Timmons' lay-up off a pass from Bryce Mitchell.  The guests increased their lead to 24 (52-28) with 11:04 left in regulation on a three by Thomas Melonja off a pass from Amari Green.  The Toros cut the 'Jack lead to 52-35 on a Jordan Hilstock three at the 7:45 mark of the half.  A Jaden Edwards' lay-up increased the 'Jack lead to 58-35 as the visitors cruised to the 66-45 road conference victory.
 
DEFENSE WINS:  The Lumberjacks held the Toros to just 45 points including 20 in the first half.  CSUDH shot 25% from the field including 16% from three-point range.  Humboldt forced 16 turnovers including eight by steals.  Bryce Mitchell and AJ Sims each had two steals to lead the 'Jacks while Amari Green, Jaden Edwards and Austin Harris each had one steal.
 
3-0 IN TORODOME:  Humboldt is now 3-0 in the Torodome after its 66-45 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills. Earlier this season, the 'Jacks defeated Western Washington (70-69) and Simon Fraser (63-50) in a pair of non-conference games in the CCAA/GNAC Challenge in Carson.
 
NUMBER EIGHT:  Jaden Edwards finished the weekend with his eighth double-double with his 13 points, 12 rebound performance.  Edwards averaged 15.5 points and 11.5 rebounds while going 12-for-24 from the field including four-of-nine from three-point land and two-for-four from the line.
 
14 ASSISTS:  The 'Jacks had 14 assists with just 1`2 turnovers this afternoon.  Amari Green paced the 'Jacks with four assists followed by Jaden Edwards with three.  Bryce Mitchell and Thomas Nelson each had two while Cam Timmons, Austin Harris and Thomas Melonja each had one.
 
UP NEXT:  The 'Jacks will return home for a pair of CCAA games this coming week in the Lumberjack Arena. Humboldt will host No 7 Chico State this Thursday, January 27 and Stanislaus State on Saturday, January 29. Both contests have a 7:30pm scheduled tip-off.
