ARCATA, Calif—The 13
th ranked Chico State Wildcats held off the Cal Poly Humboldt Lumberjacks this evening in Lumberjack Arena, 66-58. The 'Jacks were paced by
Jaden Edwards' 13-points, 11-rebounds effort for his ninth double-double of the season.
Thomas Nelson added a season high 11 points off the bench for the 'Jacks.
FIRST HALF: Chico State (12-2, 8-2 CCAA) jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the first five minute of this evening's game. A
Thomas Nelson three off a pass from
Alonzo Washington cut the Wildcat lead to 13-9 with twelve minutes left in the half. The Wildcats increased their lead to 36-20 with eighty seconds left in the half on a lay-up by Malik Duffy. A three by
Amari Green cut the deficit to 36-23 for the 'Jacks heading into the locker room.
SECOND HALF: Humboldt (10-7, 4-7 CCAA) outscored its guests 15-9 to cut the deficit to 45-38 on a jumper by
Jaden Edwards seven minutes into the second half. Another jumper from Edwards, this time on a pass from
Cam Timmons saw Humboldt cut Chico State's lead to 48-43 with 9:33 left in the game. An old-fashioned three-point play by Isaiah Brooks increased the Wildcats' lead to 57-47 with a little under seven minutes left in regulation. The 'Jacks came right and went on a 6-0 run capped by an
Amari Green jumper to cut Chico's lead to 57-53. Once again, Chico came back and increased its lead to nine (63-52) with 57 ticks left on the clock. Two free throws by Edwards made it Chico, 64-58. Brooks sealed the win for the visitors with two free throws to give them the 66-58 win.
SEASON HIGH FOR NELSON: Thomas Nelson had a season high 11 points off the bench for the 'Jacks. He went four-for-seven from the field including three-for-four from three-point land. Nelson also had two rebounds and an assist in 23 minutes.
NUMBER EIGHT: Jaden Edwards had his third consecutive double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds this evening. The junior transfer went five-for-11 from the field and three-of-five from the line in 33 minutes. Edwards has nine double-doubles on the season.
'JACK ADVANTAGE ON THE BOARD: Humboldt won the battle of the boards, 33-29 with
Jaden Edwards' 11 leading the way.
Cam Timmons had six rebounds and
Bryce Mitchell added five for the 'Jacks.
UP NEXT: The 'Jacks will host Stanislaus State on Saturday evening at 7:30pm. The Warriors defeated Sonoma State 70-59 this evening in Rohnert Park. Earlier this season, Cal Poly Humboldt defeated Stanislaus State 66-53 in Turlock.
