Humboldt Drops Final Road Match of Regular Season

SAN MARCOS, Calif.--- Edgar Castaneda scored his first goal of the season, but it wouldn't be enough, as the Cal Poly Humboldt Lumberjacks dropped their final road matchup of the regular season 2-1 against Cal State San Marcos on Sunday afternoon at The Cage in San Marcos. Devin Hauenstein, Juan Perez, Edgar Gonzalez, Sean Tucker and Jordan Bruton also had shot attempts for the Jacks, who will look to right the ship heading into their final matches of the CCAA regular season. Sam Daitch recorded three saves in net for the Jacks in his first full start of the season. The Jacks also played without starter Alex Lopez, who got his fifth yellow card of the season earlier in the week.

Humboldt outshot San Marcos 9-6. The team also narrowly beat out the Cougars in shot on goal attempts, 6-5. San Marcos held an advantage in corner kicks, 6-3. Humboldt also narrowly out-fouled the Cougars 17-15 in a match that saw seven yellow cards: four for San Marcos and three for Humboldt..

With the loss, the Jacks drop to 10th in the current CCAA standings. The team is currently five points down from the sixth and final CCAA Tournament qualifying position with three games remaining on the year. Humboldt will have the advantage of finishing their season at the friendly confines of College Creek Field, but will have perhaps their toughest gauntlet of the season, facing off against Cal State Monterey Bay, who currently sits in third in the conference, Cal State Dominguez Hills, who lead the conference and are currently ranked no. 2 in the nation, and NorCal Rival Chico State, who sits at fourth in the current conference standings.

The Jacks (2-6-7, 1-4-3 CCAA) will begin their final homestand with a matchup against Cal State Monterey Bay (7-5-2, 5-3 CCAA) on Friday, Oct. 21 at 3pm at College Creek Field.
