ROHNERT PARK, Calif.--- Riley Tishlarich had 14 assists, Else Kalar had three blocks and Lindsey McLaughlin and Avery McIntyre chipped in eight blocks each as Cal Poly Humboldt dropped three in a row to Sonoma State at the Wolves' Den on Thursday evening.
The Seawolves never game the Lumberjacks a chance to breathe, kicking off the first set of action with a 7-0 run before a Brynna Slayton service error finally put points on the board for Humboldt. The Jacks would cut the lead to four behind a block by Kalar and Malia Coyle paired with a kill by McIntyre. Humboldt wouldn't get any closer, as the Seawolves would pull away to lead by as much as nine before taking the set 16-25.
Humboldt started set number two with a kill by McLaughlin to take the first point, and kills by McIntyre kept the score back and forth early on. A service error by Riley Beyma cut the lead to 5-4 in favor of the Seawolves. Sonoma would score four of the next five points to increase their lead to four. The Jacks would respond with a kill by McLaughlin to cut the lead to 9-10. Back to back points by McIntyre would spark a 4-0 Lumberjack run to tie things up at 13, but Sonoma would respond by rattling off nine of the next 10 points to take a 21-14 lead. The Seawolves would go on to take the second set 17-25.
Both teams would start the third set going back and forth, with the Lumberjacks taking a brief lead 5-3 behind back to back McLaughlin kills. The Jacks never let the lead grow to more than five, but could never outpace Sonoma to retake the lead, as the Seawolves took the deciding set 20-25.
The Jacks (2-10, 1-8 CCAA) will look to bounce back this weekend, as both teams will face off again on Saturday in Arcata at Lumberjack Arena to officially begin the second half of conference play.
