Jacks Drop Second Part of Duel With Seawolves

ARCATA, Calif.--- Kaitlyn Patterson had 20 digs and Riley Tishlarich had 18 assists as the Cal Poly Humboldt Lumberjacks dropped the second part of their weekend matchup against Sonoma State on Saturday evening in Lumberjack Arena. Mina Barajas had a team high 13 kills while Lindsey McLaughlin added 11 of her own in the loss.

The Seawolves jumped out to an early 10-3 lead in the first set, sparked by a kill by Sonoma's Jaden Krist and a service ace by Riley Beyma. The Jacks cut the lead to five, trailing 14-9, behind a pair of kills by Barajas and a pair of errors by Jessie Hobbs and Jen Trephan. Sonoma responded by scoring 10 of the next 13 points to take a commanding 22-12 advantage. A McLaughlin kill helped spark Humboldt to four of the next five points to cut the lead down to seven. Barajas would spike an additional two kills in the end of the set to get the Lumberjacks to 20, but a kill by Kiana Richardson ended the set with the Seawolves claiming victory 25-20.

Humboldt responded in force to start the next set. Kils by Else Kalar and McLaughlin followed by a service ace by Patterson helped the Jacks jump out to an early 6-1 lead. The Jacks maintained a five point lead for the next few points until Sonoma rattled off three points in a row to cut the lead to two. The Jacks would score two in a row to get the lead back to four, but Sonoma, behind kills by Brooklyn Jackson and Jaden Krist, scored four in a row to match Humboldt at 10 each. Both teams would play back and forth for the remainder of the set until another kill by Krist set off a 5-0 run that gave the Seawolves seperation, as Sonoma went on to take the second set by the same score as the first.

Set three started off even until a 6-0 Seawolf run gave Sonoma a 13-7 lead. The visitors would lead by as much as 10 in the third set before back-to-back kills by McLaughlin and Avery McIntyre helped start a 7-2 Jack run to make the score 24-19, but Krist ended the match moments later with a kill to finish the game 25-19.

Humboldt (2-11, 1-9 CCAA) returns to action on Friday, October 14, when the team travels south to face Cal State LA. The match is set to begin at 5:00pm.
