HAYWARD, Calif.--- In a game that saw a combined 43 shot attempts, a Daniel Adeyeye header in the 80th minute off a pass from Dylan Tovani proved to be the equalizer, as the Cal Poly Humboldt Lumberjacks salvaged a 3-3 draw against the Cal State East Bay Pioneers on Sunday afternoon at Pioneer Stadium. The draw gives the Jacks a crucial point and keeps them in the hunt for a CCAA playoff position with just five games remaining in the regular season. Ten different Lumberjacks saw shot attempts on the day, with Juan Perez, Dylan Tovani and Adeyeye scoring goals for the squad.
Perez scored the first goal just five minutes into the match off a pass from Devin Hauenstein to give the Jacks an early 1-0 advantage. East Bay would respond in the 35th minute with a goal of their own from Josh Gaeckle to tie things up going into halftime.
Both teams ramped up the offensive intensity in the second half, as 27 of the games shot attempts would come in this period. Tovani put Humboldt on top in the 53rd minute with a penalty kick to give the Jacks a 2-1 lead, but the Pioneers would respond with a goal by Marco Campos in the 73rd minute to tie things up. East Bay would take the lead minutes later behind a penalty kick by Aaron Farnan at 76:23 to take their first lead of the game. Adeyeye's first goal of the season would come at the most convenient time, as his header at 80:20 ensured the Jacks would at least pull out a draw. The Jacks had a chance to go ahead one last time at 88:43, but Nico Herrera Land's shot attempt was saved by East Bay goalkeeper Zavier Hajdokovich, as the game ended in a 3-3 stalemate.
Statistically, both teams were fairly even in shot attempts, with East Bay barely edging out the Jacks 22-21. Over half of those shots would be on goal, with Humboldt having 12 attempts to the Pioneers 10. Both teams were also equal in corner kicks 6-6.
Adrian Gallardo recorded a season high seven saves in goal for the Jacks. Perez recorded his team high sixth goal of the season to lead Humboldt's offensive efforts, while Tovani scored his second goal of the season.
With the draw, the Lumberjacks earned one point to stay in the CCAA playoff hunt with five games remaining in the regular season. The team currently sits only two points behind the sixth and final playoff position in the current conference standings.
The Jacks (2-4-7, 1-2-3 CCAA) will be on the road next week against Cal State San Bernardino (4-3-5, 0-3-3 CCAA) and Cal State San Marcos (4-7-2, 2-3-1 CCAA) in their final road matches of the regular season. After this, the team will finish off the regular season with three straight matches at home.
