‘Jacks Begin CCAA Season with Doubleheader Split

CARSON, Calif---  The visiting Cal Poly Humboldt Lumberjacks (5-5, 1-1 CCAA) began its 2022 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) with a doubleheader split with Cal State Dominguez Hills this afternoon at Toro Diamond in Carson, Calif.  The 'Jacks took the opener 5-3 behind Karen Di Dio's pitching and Micaela Harris' hitting. 
 
GAME ONE:  Micaela Harris opened up the doubleheader with a solo home run over the left center fence.  Ciera Pyle walked, stole second and scored when Katelyn Dendas reached on a two-base Toro error.  The 'Jacks added another run in the top of the third.  Harris had a lead-off triple and scored when Dendas reached on an error by the Toros to increase Humboldt's lead to 3-0.
 
Humboldt scored two insurance runs in its half of the fourth inning.  Vanessa Saltos had a lead-off walk and went to second when Hollee Travao reached on a one-out bunt single.  Harris walked to load the bases.  With two outs, Pyle was hit by a pitch to bring in Saltos with the Lumberjacks' fourth run of the game. The 'Jacks took a 5-0 lead as Izzy Starr drew a bases loaded walk to bring in Travao. 
 
The score remained 5-0 until Cal State Dominguez Hills' last at bat.  The Toros scored three runs on four hits to cut the 'Jack lead to 5-3 with two outs.  Karen Di Dio (3-0) induced the final Toro batter to ground out back to her to preserve the 5-3 Humboldt victory.
 
'JACK STARS:  Karen Di Dio improved to 3-0 as she pitched seven innings, giving up nine hits and three runs (one earned) while striking out two.  Micaela Harris had two of the Lumberjacks' four hits while scoring twice.  She also had her second home run of the season, a solo shot to lead off the game. 
 
GAME TWO:  Cal State Dominguez Hills (10-3, 1-1 CCAA) took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.  The hosts scored four runs on just two hits and two Lumberjack errors. 
 
Katelyn Dendas had a lead-off double to begin the Lumberjack second inning.  She scored on a double by JoAna Mullins to cut the 'Jack deficit to 4-1. 
 
The Toros took an 8-1 lead with a four-run third inning.  Katelyn Sturm's two-run double was the big hit for CSUDH.  Humboldt came back with two runs of its own in the top of the fourth inning.  Dendas had a lead-off single went to third on a one-out double by Vanessa Saltos.  Both Dendas and Saltos scored on a one-out double by Anna Brondos to cut the Toro lead to 8-3. 
 
CSUDH scored an insurance run in the fourth on a solo home run by Claudia Valencia.  The Toros scored four more runs in the fifth, three came off the bat of Valencia with a three-run home run to give the hosts the 13-3 victory in five innings.
 
Gaige Garcia (2-2) suffered the loss for the 'Jacks while Vanessa Ritchie and Ava Hand also pitched for Humboldt in the night cap.
 
'JACK STARS: Katelyn Dendas and JoAna Mullins each had two hits for the 'Jacks.  Anna Brondos drove in two runs while Dendas scored two of the Lumberjacks' three runs.
 
UP NEXT:  The two teams will complete the four-game weekend series with another doubleheader in Carson starting at 10am tomorrow morning, Saturday, February 19 at Toro Diamond.
