Humboldt Takes Series From The Toros With Doubleheader Sweep

CARSON, Calif---  Cal Poly Humboldt Lumberjacks (7-5, 3-1 CCAA) took the four-game conference series from the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros with today's doubleheader sweep.  The 'Jacks took game one 9-6 while taking game two 7-2.  With the sweep, Humboldt won three out of the four games from the Toros.  Karen Di Dio (4-0) and Gaige Garcia (3-2) recorded the complete game victories.  Vanessa Saltos went four-for-seven with eight runs batted in, four home runs and five runs scored. 
 
GAME ONE:  The 'Jacks took a 1-0 lead in their half of the first inning.  Micaela Harris had a lead-off double and scored later in the inning to take a 1-0 lead.  Cal State Dominguez Hills (10-5, 1-3 CCAA) scored two in its half of the first to take a 2-1 lead. 
 
Humboldt tied the game at 2-2 with a solo home run by Vanessa Saltos in the top of the third inning.  The 'Jacks took a 7-2 lead with a five-run fourth inning.  Megan Escobar reached on an error and went to third on JoAna Mullin's single.  Harris reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases.  With two outs, Katelyn Dendas hit a two-run single to give Humboldt a 4-2 lead.  Still with two outs, Saltos hit a three-run home run to increase the Lumberjacks a 7-2 led. 
 
The Toros scored a run in their half of the fourth to cut the 'Jack lead to 7-3.  The 'Jacks added another run in the fifth to take an 8-3 lead.  CSUDH (10-5, 1-3 CCAA) cut its deficit to 8-5 with two runs in the bottom of the fifth.  Humboldt added another run in the sixth on another Saltos' solo home run.  The hosts added another run in their last at bat to make the final 9-6.
 
'JACK STARS: Vanessa Saltos went three-for-five with three runs scored, five runs batted in and three home runs.  Megan Escobar and JoAna Mullins each had two hits.  Karen Di Dio (4-0) picked up third consecutive complete game win.
 
GAME TWO:  The 'Jacks took an early 5-0 lead to begin the night cap.  Micaela Harris had a lead-off double, went to third on a wild pitch.  JoAna Mullins walked to place runners on the corners.  Mullins stole second with no one out.  Izzy Starr reached on a sacrifice bunt and Harris scored on an errant throw.  With one out, Vanessa Saltos hit her fourth home run of the day, a three-run shot to give the 'Jacks a 4-0 lead.  The 'Jacks added another run on a solo two-out home run by Megan Escobar
 
The score remained 5-0 Lumberjacks until the Toro sixth.  CSUDH scored its first run in the sixth to make it 5-1 Humboldt.  The 'Jacks added two insurance runs in the seventh to increase the guests' lead to 7-1.  The hosts scored a run in the seventh to make the final 7-2.
 
'JACK STARS:  Gaige Garcia (3-2) picked up the complete game victory.  Vanessa Saltos drove in three runs with her fourth home run of the game while scoring two runs.  Micaela Harris went three-for-three with a run scored. 
 
UP NEXT:  Humboldt will travel to Hayward for a four-game series with Cal State East Bay on Feb. 25-26. The four-game series will begin with a noon starting doubleheader on Friday, February 25.  The series will conclude with a 11am starting doubleheader on Saturday, February 26.
