CHICO, Calif--- Cal Poly Humboldt Lumberjack track and field duo of
Travis Allen and
Grace Kasberger each had an exceptional day at the Chico Multi-Event Classic in Chico, Calif. Both Allen and Kasberger are in second place in the decathlon and heptathlon heading into the final day tomorrow and recorded several personal best marks.
"We couldn't ask for a better day. Grace (Kasberger) and Travis (Allen) had outstanding performances today, each setting new personal bests in almost every event," said head coach
Sarah Ingram. "They competed with poise, and displayed the confidence of seasoned veterans throughout the competition. My expectations have been exceeded and then some. I am so proud of what they each accomplished today, and excited for tomorrow! "
Alissa Brooks-Johnson, an unattached post-collegiate athlete, is leading the heptathlon competition with 3437 points, while Kasberger is leading the collegiate field with 2297 points, ahead of the next collegiate athlete by 168 points. Kasberger with a life time best performance took second in the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.90. Kasberger came back with a strong performance in the high jump placing second with a jump of 4.8.75 (1.44m). With another life time best, Kasberger threw the shot put 29-0 ft (8.84m) for a third place finish. Kasberger wrapped up the day with another personal best this time in the 200-meter dash. With a time of 27.39, Kasberger tallied 680 points for third-place. With Kasberger's 3 personal bests, she produced a 344 point improvement from her day one heptathlon score last season.
Allen is second out of eight athletes with 2906 points heading into day two of the decathlon tomorrow. Allen trails Matthew Briggins of Yuba College by just 36 points. Allen started the day with a life time best time of 12.18 earning him 6
th place. Allen came back with a college personal best in the long jump with a leap of 20-2.50 (6.18m) placing him second in the event. Allen won the shot put with a toss of 36-6.75 (11.14m). Allen posted another first-place finish in the high jump clearing the 5-10.75 (1.8m) bar. The high jump was Allen's highest scoring event earning him 627 points. Rounding out day one with another life time best performance, Allen finished the 400-meter run in a time of 57.89. Setting new bests in 4 of his 5 events, Allen's end of day one decathlon score is a 334 point improvement from last season.
The 'Jacks will be back in action tomorrow morning to complete day two of the Decathlon and Heptathlon. Allen will be back on the track tomorrow morning at 10:00am with the 110-meter Hurdles followed by the Discus throw, Pole Vault, Javelin, and the 1500-meter run to finish out the decathlon. Kasberger will begin at noon on the Long Jump runway followed by the Javelin and 800-meter run.
