Humboldt Softball Posts Third Straight Doubleheader Split

DENVER, Colo.--- For the third straight doubleheader , the Cal Poly Humboldt Lumberjacks (3-3) split their doubleheader at Regis University this afternoon taking the opener 12-11 and falling the night cap 10-7 (six innings called because of darkness).  Karen Di Dio (1-0) picked up the win in relief for the 'Jacks while Izzy Starr drove in four runs and JoAna Mullins drove in three. Katelyn Dendas had three hits in the loss in game two.
 
GAME ONE:  Cal Poly Humboldt took a 2-0 to begin game one.  Micaela Harris had a lead-off double and then Ciera Pyle walked.  The 'Jacks had a successful double steal attempt as Harris and Pyle went to third and second.  Harris scored on a ground out by Izzy Starr. The 'Jacks took a 2-0 lead on a double by Katelyn Dendas
 
Regis (1-1) scored eight runs in its half of the first keyed by a Carly Beard two-run double as the hosts took an 8-2 lead. The Rangers added another run in the second.  Mia Moore had a two-out triple and scored on a single by Madison Flores
 
The 'Jacks cut the deficit to 9-5 with a three-run third inning.  Starr had a one-out single and went to third on a Dendas double.  Both 'Jacks scored on a single by JoAna MullinsVanessa Saltos drove in Mullins for the Lumberjacks' fifth run of the game.
 
Humboldt tied the game at 9-9 with a four-run fifth inning.  Three of those runs came on an home run by Starr. Regis retook the lead, 11-9, with a two-run sixth inning. 
 
Cal Poly Humboldt took a 12-11 lead with a three-run seventh.  Pyle walked and went to third on a double by Starr.  Dendas drove in Pyle with a single which placed Starr at third.  Annabelle Dixon pinch ran for Starr and scored on a single by Mullins.  The 'Jacks took the lead on a sacrifice fly by Alyssa Ramirez which brought in Dendas with the go-ahead run. 
 
The Rangers threaten in their half of the seventh, but Karen Di Dio (1-0) struck out the final batter to preserve the 12-11 'Jack win. Di Dio pitched 6.1 innings of relief, giving up seven hits, three runs and striking out eight. 
 
Saltos went four-for-five with a run batted in.  Mullins, Starr and Dendas all had three hits with Starr driving in four runs, Mullins three and Dendas two.
 
GAME TWO:   Once again, the Lumberjacks took the early lead in their half of the second.  Harris reached on an error and advanced to second on a stolen base.  She scored on a sacrifice bunt by Pyle.  Dendas hit a two-out triple and scored on a single by Mullins.
 
Regis cut the 'Jack lead in half on a solo home run by Allisha Martinez in the Rangers' frame of the first.  Humboldt (3-3) increased its lead to 3-1 with a run in the second inning. The Rangers once again cut the Humboldt lead to one run (3-2) on a Beard run scoring double which scored Rachel Williams who reached on a lead-off single. 
 
The hosts erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the third to take a 9-3 lead. Beard's bases clearing double was the key hit for the Rangers in the third.  They added an insurance run in the fourth to take a 10-3 lead on a Katherine Raper solo home run.
 
Humboldt cut the deficit to 10-5 with a two-run fifth inning.  Starr reached on a fielding error and went to third on a double by Dendas. Both Starr and Dendas scored on a one-out two-run double by Saltos go cut the 'Jacks deficit to 10-5.
 
In the top of the sixth inning, Harris had a lead-off single. She stole second and scored on a triple by Pyle.  Dendas doubled home Pyle to cut the Ranger lead to 10-7.  Mullins walked with one out.  Alexis Kemp induced the next 'Jack better to ground out to an inning ending double play.  The game was called for darkness as the 'Jacks fell in the night cap 10-7.
 
Vanessa Richie (0-1) suffered the loss in relief.  Dendas had three hits and a run driven in while Saltos drove in two runs.  Both Harris and Kristen Ingram each drove in two runs.
 
Humboldt will finish off its Colorado trip tomorrow with an 11am (MT) starting doubleheader with MSU-Denver.  The Roadrunners swept Fort Hays State earlier today 8-1 and 6-5.
