TURLOCK, Calif.--- After falling 3-1 in the opener of this weekend's four-game series this afternoon in Turlock, Calif., the Cal Poly Humboldt Lumberjacks battled back to win the night cap 5-4 over the Stanislaus State Warriors.
Vanessa Richie picked up the win in relief in game two while
JoAna Mullins and
Vanessa Saltos each drove in two runs and
Micaela Harris had three hits, a run batted in and her 17
th stolen base. In the opener, Mullins had three of the Lumberjacks' nine hits to lead the way for Humboldt.
GAME ONE: Cal Poly Humboldt took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning.
Katelyn Dendas had a one-out single and went to second on a two-out bunt single by Hollee Travos. Dendas scored the game's first run on a single by
Ciera Pyle.
Stanislaus State came right back in its half of the second. Melissa Spencer walked with one out, went to second on a ground out by Jalyssa Ledesma. She scored on a single by Katie Thornsberry. The Warriors took a 2-1 lead on a two-out triple by Lauryn Serda. They added insurance run on a double by Cherise Mori.
The Jacks had a chance to tie or take the lead in their last at bat. With two outs,
Micaela Harris had an infield single. Harris went to second on pinch-hit infield single by
Julia Rivera. Still with two outs,
JoAna Mullins singled to load the bases. With the bases loaded and two outs, reliever Kyndra Marzorini induced the final Jack batter to fly out to center to preserve the 3-1 Warrior victory.
JACK STARS: JoAna Mullins had three of the Lumberjacks' nine hits.
Ciera Pyle went one-for-two with a run batted in and a stolen base.
Katelyn Dendas also had a hit and a run scored for Humboldt.
Megan Holt pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, giving up no hits, striking out two and walking one.
GAME TWO: Stanislaus State took a 1-0 lead on a two-out single by Lauryn Serda in the bottom of the second inning. Cal Poly Humboldt (8-14, 4-10 CCAA) took a 3-1 lead in its half of the fourth inning.
Julia Rivera walked with one out and advanced to second on a walk drawn by
Hollee Travao.
Micaela Harris' single loaded the bases. With two outs, JoAna Mulls drove in Rivera with a single up the middle to tie the game at 1-1.
Izzy Starr walked to bring in Travao and to give the Jacks. 2-1 lead. The Jacks doubled their lead on a run scoring single by
Vanessa Saltos.
Humboldt increased its lead to 4-1 on back-to-back two-out doubles by Travao and Harris in the top of the fourth inning. Stanislaus State (6-13, 4-10 CCAA) scored twice in its half of the fourth to cut the deficit to 4-3. The Warriors tied the game, 4-4, in the bottom of the fifth
The score remained tied until the Lumberjack top of the seventh inning. Mullins had a lead-off double and went to third on a single by Starr. Saltos' ground out to second brought in Mullins with what proved to be the game-winning run.
The Warriors had a chance to tie the game in their half of the seventh. They had runners on second and third with two outs. With the count 1-1,
Vanessa Richie (1-2) induced the next batter to ground out back to her to preserve the 5-4 Jack victory.
JACK STARS: Vanessa Richie pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, giving up three hits while walking no one in earning her first victory of the season.
Micaela Harris stole her 17
th base of the season while going three-for-four with a run batted in and a run scored.
Vanessa Saltos had two hits and drove in two runs and
JoAna Mullins also had two hits, scored a run and drove in two runs.
SERIES CONCLUDES: The two teams will conclude the four-game weekend CCAA series tomorrow with another doubleheader beginning at 11am at Warrior Field in Turlock.
