CSUMB Takes First Two Games of Four-Game Weekend Series with the Jacks

SEASIDE, Calif---Cal State Monterey Bay took the first two games of this weekend's four-game conference series with Cal Poly Humboldt 9-4 and 8-0 (5) this afternoon in Seaside.  The two teams will conclude the four-game series tomorrow morning with an 11am starting doubleheader in Seaside.
 
GAME ONE: Cal Poly Humboldt (11-21, 6-16 CCAA) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.  Micaela Harris had a lead-off single and went to second on a passed ball. She scored when Annabelle Dixon had a sacrifice bunt which brought in Harris with the game's first run.
 
The score remained 1-0 Lumberjacks until the Otter half of the second.  Haylee Clay had a lead-off single. She went to second on a wild pitch and to third on a sacrifice bunt by Alyssa Burt.  After a walk to Oli Perez, Clay scored on a one-out single by Abby Alcayaga to tie the game at 1-1.  Perez scored on a single by Jessica Cross to give the hosts a 2-1 lead.  Cal State Monterey Bay added another run later in the inning to take a 3-1 lead.
 
The Otters doubled their lead with a three-run third capped by a two-run home run by Perez to take a 6-1 lead.  Humboldt cut the deficit to 6-2 on a sacrifice fly by Katelyn Dendas which brought in Izzy Starr
 
Cal State Monterey Bay increased its lead to 7-2 with a run in the fifth inning.  The Jacks cut the deficit to 7-4 with a two-run sixth inning.  Starr had a lead-off single and advanced to second on a walk to Vanessa SaltosAlyssa Ramirez singled to load the bases with no outs.  Starr scored on a walk by Dendas.  With two outs, Harris walked to bring in Saltos and cut the Otter lead to 7-4. 
 
The hosts added two insurance runs in the sixth to take a 9-4 lead into the seventh.  Saltos walked with two outs and went to second on an infield single by Ramirez.  The Otters induced the final Jack to strike out to preserve the 9-4 victory.
 
JACK STARS: Micaela Harris, Alyssa Ramirez and Izzy Starr each had two hits.  Starr scored twice while Harris also scored a run for Humboldt.  Harris also drove in a run as did Annabelle Dixon while Katelyn Dendas drove in two runs. 
 
GAME TWO:  Cal State Monterey Bay (19-10, 9-9 CCAA) took an early 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning.  Clay had a two-out single that drove in Cross with the game's first run.  The Jacks had a chance to tie the game in their half of the second inning.  Dendas and Megan Escobar had one-out back to back singles.  They advanced a base on sacrifice bunt by Hollee Travao.  The Otters intentionally walked Harris to load the bases with two outs.  The Otters struck out the next Jack batter as CSUMB held on to the 1-0 lead.
 
The Otters increased their lead to 5-0 with a four-run second inning.  They added two insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 7-0 lead.  Humboldt had another chance to break into the run column in the top of the fifth inning.  Tessa Poirier had a one-out pinch-hit single, but Kassidy Stetler (3-1) induced the next two batters to fly out to center field and to right center to end the Jacks' scoring threat. 
 
CSUMB won the game in its half of the eighth inning on a run scoring single by Perez to take the 8-0 five inning victory.
 
JACK STARS:  Three Jacks had one hit apiece in Tessa Poirier, Katelyn Dendas and Megan Escobar.
 
UP NEXT: Cal Poly Humboldt will conclude its four-game series with Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday, March 26 with an 11am starting doubleheader in Seaside.
