Gaige Garcia Keys Jacks’ Day One of TOC

TURLOCK Calif.---  Gaige Garcia (4-5) pitched 6.2 innings in relief in their second game of the day to pick up the win in the Lumberjacks' 5-1 win over Hawai'i Pacific.  Garcia g up five hits and no runs while striking out five and walking one in Humboldt's win.  The Jacks lost their first game of the tournament 4-1 to Western Washington.
 
WESTERN WASHINGTON 4, CAL POLY HUMBOLDT 1:  Western Washington took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.  Tatum Dow had a lead-off double and went to third on an infield single by Lauren Lo.  Dow scored on a one-out-single by Courtney Shimabukuro. 
 
The score remained 1-0 Vikings until the Jack half of the third.  Izzy Starr had a two-out double and scored on a single up the middle by Vanessa Saltos to tie the game at 1-1.
 
Western Washington took a 3-1 lead on a two-run one-out double by Shimabukuro in the bottom of the fifth inning.  The Vikings added an insurance in the sixth.  Taylor Khorrami had a two-out single and scored on a single by Dow to give the Vikings a 4-1 lead. 
 
Sydney Brown (6-2) retired the Jacks in order in the seventh to preserve the 4-1 Viking win.
 
JACK STARS:  Izzy Starr had two of the Jacks five hits and scored their only run.  Vanessa Saltos had an RBI single for Humboldt.  Karen Di Dio (6-11) pitched six innings, giving up 10 hits and four runs while striking out six and walking two.
 
CAL POLY HUMBOLDT 5, HAWAI'I PACIFIC 1:   The Sharks took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Brandi Leong reached on a Jack error.  She went to second on a wild pitch and went to third on a ground out.  Leong scored on a wild pitch. 
 
Cal Poly Humboldt (12-24) scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 2-1 lead.  Anna Brondos had a lead-off double and went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Hollee Travao.  She scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 1-1.  With two outs, Micaela Harris singled.  She stole second, went to third on an error by the Sharks' catcher and scored on another error by the Sharks' outfielder to give Humboldt a 2-1 lead.
 
The Jacks increased their lead to 5-1 with a three-run fourth inning.  With two outs, Harris singled and stole second.  She advanced to third on a fielding error by the Sharks which JoAna Mullins reached first base.  Mullins stole second and scored along with Harris when Izzy Starr reached on a dropped fly ball.  Starr gave Humboldt a 5-1 lead on a double by Vanessa Saltos
 
Hawai'i Pacific had a chance to tie the game in its last at bat.  Neva Poulin had a lead-off single, went to second on a two-out infield single by Tiari Hernandez.  Leong had another infield single to load the bases for the Sharks.  Gaige Garcia (4-5) induced the next Shark batter to ground out to Mullins at short to preserve the 5-1 Jack victory.
 
JACK STARS:  Micaela Harris went three-for-four with two runs scored and two stolen bases.  Izzy Starr had two hits and scored a run for the Jacks.  Gaige Garcia pitched 6.2 innings, giving up five hits while striking out five and walking one.
 
UP NEXT:  Cal Poly Humboldt will continue its play in the Tournament of Champions on Saturday, April 2.  Humboldt will face Hawai'i Hilo at 11:30am and Azusa Pacific at 4:30pm.
