Cal Poly Humboldt Battles with the No. 1 Eagles


TURLOCK Calif.---  In their final game at the 2022 Tournament of Champions, the Cal Poly Humboldt Lumberjacks battled with the No. 1 ranked Concordia Eagles (38-3).  The Eagles defeated the Jacks in both teams' final game of the tournament, 4-1.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:  Cal Poly Humboldt (12-27) had a chance to take an early lead in the top of the first inning.  Micaela Harris walked and stole second, but was stranded at second as the Eagles retired the next three Jack batters.
 
The score remained scoreless until the Eagle half of the third inning.  Lauren Lopez had a one-out bunt single.  She went to third on an infield single by Megan Massa.  Lopez scored the game's first run on a successful suicide squeeze play by Jasmine Gorman.  The Eagles doubled their lead on a successful double steal by Massa and Gorman.  Concordia scored its third run when Gorman scored on a wild pitch by the Jacks.
 
The Jacks had a chance to cut into the Eagle lead in the top of the fourth.  Izzy Starr doubled with one out, but was stranded there when the next two batters struck out to end the Humboldt scoring threat. 
 
Humboldt cut the deficit to 3-1 with a run in the top of the sixth inning.  Harris walked with one out, stole second. She then stole third and scored on an errant throw.
 
Concordia added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on a one-out run scoring double by Lopez to give the Eagles a 4-1 lead.  The Jacks had another chance to break into the Eagle lead in the top of the seventh.  Anna Brondos walked with two outs, but the Eagles induced the next batter to ground out to the shortstop to preserve the 4-1 Eagle win.
 
JACK STARS:  Izzy Starr went two-for-three while Micaela Harris had three stolen bases and scored a run.  Karen Di DIo (6-13) gave up ten hits and four runs while striking out four and walking one in 5.1 innings.  Ava Hand pitched 0.2 scoreless innings of relief while striking out two.
 
UP NEXT:  Cal Poly Humboldt will end its 11-game road trip on Tuesday, April 5 for a noon starting doubleheader in San Rafael against Dominican (Calif.)
