QUOTES FROM COACH INGRAM: "It was two very hot days in Turlock, with temps in mid 90's, easily being 30 degrees hotter than anything our athletes have competed in this spring. We hydrated aggressively the week beforehand and throughout the past two days at the track, and maintained our 'cool' physically and emotionally throughout the 2-day competition.
Words cannot describe how proud of these two athletes I am.
After our first heptathlon/decathlon competition went so well in February, with Gracie and Travis hitting personal bests in almost everything, I thought that was going to be a really tough competition to follow, and especially in this extreme heat where it would be difficult to perform to their best ability. I didn't know how we could continue improving at that that same rate, and I feared they would be disappointed at this meet bc you can't hit new personal bests in everything all of the time, especially as these new bests get more and more competitive. However, they continue to impress me with their maturity and confidence in the way they are approaching every competition.
Travis had some of his stronger events this week where he didn't earn as many points as he felt like he should have, but he didn't let himself get down and lose focus. Instead he continued to fight for every opportunity to earn more points elsewhere, and maintained his goal of hitting 5500 points throughout the comp. Today, he set lifetime personal bests of roughly 14" higher bar clearance in the pole vault and cut 7 seconds off of his 1500m time. His day 2 score was a 296-point improvement from his previous best day 2 score in Feb, and he finished with an overall point PR of 371 points in the Decathlon.
In a typical training year for an average athlete an improvement of 400-500 points in a season is considered a success, and Travis has improved 830 points from last year to this year so far, which is astounding. It's really exciting to see this dramatic level of improvement, and also to know that if he can put it all together in the next Dec, he still has so much room for improvement in his overall score and he may be vying for a top 3 conference spot in the Dec in May.
Gracie just blew away the competition this week, earning four 1st place finishes, a couple 2nds, and a 3rd across her seven events. What was most impressive about Grace's competition this week was her consistency in performing so close to all of her lifetime best marks. She didn't set a new personal best in any one individual event this week, but because she was so consistent across the board with no event slumps, she came away with an overall heptathlon lifetime best of 113 points. This is such an important take-away from a multi-event competition, that putting it all together on 2 days is what it's really about, it's that sustained high quality performance average over 7 events that's what really makes a successful competition. And knowing that Gracie can perform so consistently across the board, again despite the heat which can really take the explosive 'pop' out of your legs and make you feel so drained, it just shows us how much she has raised the bar with her new 'average' exceeding her previous best. What this means to me, is that when we have better weather conditions and a 'big meet' atmosphere (which we will certainly have at CCAA Championships), she's going to pop off some big marks and I believe she's going to be knocking on the door of the NCAA provisional qualifying mark by the end of the season.
It's been such a joy to watch Gracie and Travis these past two days, earning the respect of their competitors and competing with class, being supportive of each other and fellow competitors and thanking the meet officials and fans. They are model student-athletes, who make us all so proud to be Cal Poly Humboldt."
