ARCATA, Calif.---- Cal Poly Humboldt Lumberjacks opened up their 2022 season with a 2-2 draw against the visiting Northwest Nazarene Nighthawks. The Jacks trailed 1-0 at the half, but came back in the second half with goals by
Devin Hauenstein and
Juan Perez to take a 2-1 lead. The Nighthawks scored with less than six minutes left off a ball from Jake Levine as the two teams settled for a 2-2 stalemate.
FIRST HALF: Northwest Nazarene (0-0-1) dominated the first 45-minute period posting seven shot attempts to the Jacks' zero. The visitors took the 1-0 lead on a goal by Jimmy Koufidakis off a ball from Jake Levine in the eighth minute. The Nighthawks had a chance to double its led but the Jack keeper,
Adrian Gallardo made two saves in the 15
th minute to keep the score 1-0, NNU. The guests had another chance to take a 2-0 lead, but Gallardo made another of his four saves stopping Sullivan Smith as the match went into the half with Northwest Nazarene leading 1-0.
SECOND HALF: The Jacks came out of the locker room on fire as
Devin Hauenstein saw his chance to tie the match at 1-1 be stopped by NNU's Sawyer Price in the 55
th minute. Five minutes later, the Jacks had another chance to tie the match, but
Daniel Adeyeye's shot sailed high over the net. The match remained 1-0 NNU until the 71
st minute when Hauenstein connected on a through ball from
Dylan Tovani to tie the match at 1-1. Cal Poly Humboldt (0-0-1) took the 2-1 lead in the 78
th minute on a goal by
Juan Perez off a cross from Nico Herrera-Land.
Humboldt had a chance to double its lead, but Hauenstein's shot sailed high over the net in the 84
th minute. One minute later, the Nighthawks tied the match at 2-2 on a goal by Levine off a ball by Cameron Natvig. There only was one shot attempt in the final minutes by both teams as the match ended in a 2-2 draw.
FIRST GOAL: Juan Perez scored his first goal as a Jack after transferring from Chico State last spring.
Devin Hauenstein's goal was his eighth in his career at Humboldt.
Dylan Tovani now has three assists in his career as a Jack with Nico Herrera-Land recording his fifth assist in the Green and Gold.
FOUR SAVES: Adrian Gallardo had four saves in goal for Humboldt this afternoon. The Nighthawks' Sawyer Price had one save.
UP NEXT: Cal Poly Humboldt will host Holy Names this Saturday, August 27 at 11:30am at College Creek Field. The Hawks tied Stanislaus State 2-2 in Orinda, Calif., earlier this afternoon.
