ARCATA, Calif.--- The visiting Cal State San Marcos Cougars swept the Cal Poly Humboldt Lumberjacks in three sets (16-25, 17-25, 7-25) this evening at Lumberjack Arena.
Lindsey McLaughlin paced the Jacks with seven kills while
Riley Tishlarich added 12 assists.
FIRST SET: Both teams started the first set even, switching points early and often through the first half. A kill by Amanda Klotz and a service ace helped to give the Jacks a brief 12-11 advantage. However, a kill by Madison Turner keyed a 13-0 run, as San Marcos scored 14 of the next 18 points to take the set, 25-16.
SECOND SET: The Cougars jumped out to an early 8-3 lead behind kills by Turner, Gwynnie Wentzel and Trinity Barr. Avery McIntyre recorded one of her four kills tonight to spark a brief Jacks run to get the team within one point. The two teams battled back and forth, with a kill by Cecilia Costa getting the Jacks in striking range 13-14. San Marcos made another run, scoring five of the next six points to widen their lead to five. Humboldt would make one more run to shrink the lead to within three, but the Cougars responded by closing the set on a 6-0 run, claiming it 25-17.
THIRD SET: The Lumberjacks couldn't seem to find a rhythm in the third set, as San Marcos started the third set by going on a 19-5 run to put the game out of reach. The set and the match would end with the Cougars taking the third set 25-7.
STAT LEADERS: Once again, Lindsey McLaughlin led the way for the Jacks with seven kills, followed by Amanda Klotz who added six kills and one block. Riley Tishlarich added 12 assists while Gianna Giacomotto and Kaitlyn Patterson had eight and seven digs, respectively.
UP NEXT: The Jacks travel to Pomona to face off against Cal Poly Pomona at 5pm on Friday, Sept. 16 at Kellogg Arena.
