POMONA, Calif.--- Cal Poly Humboldt fell in three straight sets (16-25, 18-25, 12-25) to No. 25 Cal Poly Pomona on Friday evening at Kellogg Arena. Avery McIntyre led the Jacks with nine kills while Riley Tishlarich and Nicole Yakushenok added 12 and 10 assists, respectively.
FIRST SET: Pomona jumped out to an early 6-1 lead to begin the first set behind back to back kills from the Broncos' Daisy Duke and Samantha Campion. The Jacks responded, cutting the lead to 5-6 following a kill by Lindsey McLaughlin and an attack error by Duke. The Jacks would keep the deficit to within three points until a Duke kill assisted by Caitie Mueller sparked a 5-0 run to put the Broncos up 18-11. The Jacks would get to within five points behind a service ace by Malia Coyle, but Pomona responded by scoring five of the last six points to take the set 16-25.
SECOND SET: The Jacks kept pace early on in the second set, taking a brief 3-2 lead when a Campion attack was blocked by Malia Coyle. The Jacks would take their largest lead of the set when a kill by McIntyre, assisted by Yakushenok, made the score 9-6 in favor of Humboldt. The lead would be short lived, as the Broncos rallied to score three straight and tie the set at nine. The teams would go back and forth until Pomona ripped five unanswered points to take a 15-11 advantage. The Broncos took advantage of the momentum swing, never letting the Jacks get to within four as they took the second set 18-25.
THIRD SET: Pomona started the third set on fire, jumping out to a 5-1 lead before a kill by Cecilia Costa stopped the bleeding. Humboldt would claw back to within four points before a 7-0 run put the game out of reach, as the Jacks fell in the third set, 12-25.
