SAN BERNARDINO, Calif.--- The Cal Poly Humboldt volleyball team looked early on like they might give no. 12 Cal State San Bernardino some trouble, but a momentum shift midway through the first set stopped the Lumberjacks cold, as the team lost three in a row to drop their sixth straight match on Saturday night in San Bernardino. Malia Coyle led Humboldt with five kills while Nicole Yakushenok supplied 10 assists and seven digs in the loss.
FIRST SET: A service ace right off the bat by Yakushenok started things off on the right foot for the Lumberjacks, who jumped out to an early 4-1 lead behind an Else Kalar kill, a block by Kalar and Coyle and another service ace by Macy Thomas. Back to back kills by Kalar and Coyle would give the Lumberjacks a 6-3 advantage before a service error by Coyle sparked a 5-0 Coyote run to give San Bernardino the lead 8-6. The Jacks responded to close the deficit to within one and the game went back and forth for the next few points. A kill by Savannah Hoffman set off another San Bernardino run to give the Coyotes their largest lead of the set, 16-10. The Lumberjacks responded by chipping away, scoring six of the next nine points to narrow the gap to 16-19. The Coyotes would bring the lead back to five behind kills by Ashley Robinson and Melissa Garciglia. The gap would remain at five as San Bernardino took the first set 20-25.
SECOND SET: The Lumberjacks couldn't replicate the strong start from their first set, as San Bernardino started off on a 6-0 run. The Coyotes would stretch the lead to 15-4 before double errors by Jenna Patton and Marlee Nunley allowed Humboldt to close the lead to single digits, 15-6. The Jacks would fail to close the lead any further, dropping the set 25-13.
THIRD SET: The third set started back and forth, with both teams switching off for the first few points. However, another Patton kill started yet another Coyote run, as San Bernardino rattled off seven unanswered points to take an early 12-3 lead. The Jacks couldn't string together a consistent run in the third set, as the Coyotes took seven of the last eight points in the set to clinch the victory, 25-11.
UP NEXT: The Jacks look to bounce back next week as they continue their CCAA roadtrip with a match against Cal State Monterey Bay in Seaside, Calif. on Friday, Sept. 23 at 5pm.
