SEASIDE, Calif.--- Cal Poly Humboldt couldn't seem to find their rhythm as the Lumberjacks fell in three sets to Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday afternoon at the Otter Sports Center. Amanda Klotz had a team high seven kills while Malia Coyle and Avery McIntyre chipped in six and three kills, respectively. Nicole Yakushenok had 13 assists and Macy Thomas had 14 digs to go with three aces.
FIRST SET: Monterey would jump out to an early 4-1 lead behind a trio of errors by Thomas, Yakushenok and Lindsey McLaughlin. Humboldt would answer a few tries later, scoring six of the next eight points to take an 8-5 lead early in set one. The Jacks would expand their lead to five, leading 11-6 behind kills by Klotz and McIntyre. A Lauren Reeves kill assisted by Kennedy Adams spurned Monterey Bay to seven of the next nine points to tie things up at 13. Both teams would trade the lead for the next few points, but a McLauglin attack error set up an 8-0 Monterey run to put the Otters up by six, 16-22. The Jacks couldn't make up the gap, falling 19-25 in set one.
SECOND SET: The Otters wasted no time in the second set, jumping out to an early 5-0 lead behind back-to-back kills by Mikayla Nolte and Savanna Maker. The Lumberjacks would respond by rattling off four unanswered points of their own, with kills by Elyse McKinney and Else Kalar followed by back-to-back service aces by Thomas. The Jacks would take the lead 13-12 behind a Riley White service ace and an attack error by the Otter's Lauren Reeves. Monterey Bay would respond by going on their longest run of the set, scoring seven straight points to take a 19-13 advantage. The Otters would claim six of the last eight points to take set two 25-15.
THIRD SET: Humboldt took advantage of a Kaylie Honberger attack error and another service ace by Thomas to jump to a 3-1 lead to start the third set. Kills by McLaughlin and Coyle paired with a bad set by Ashley Vanderpan gave the Jacks a 6-3 advantage. However, Monterey responded big, going on another 7-0 run to regain the lead 10-6. The home team would expand it's lead to six behind a service ace by Vanderpan and an attack error by Coyle. The Lumberjacks would never get closer than four, as Monterey Bay cruised through the remainder of the set to take a 25-16 victory.
STATS: Amanda Klotz and Malia Coyle led the scoring efforts tonight with seven and six kills, respectively. Coyle would follow that up with three aces and a block. Macy Thomas anchored the Lumberjacks defensively, digging up 14 balls while chipping in three service aces as well. Kaitlyn Patterson added eight digs while Riley White added five to go with four assists and an ace.
UP NEXT: The Lumberjacks (1-7, 0-5 CCAA) will look to rebound against the Gators of San Francisco State. The match begins at 5pm tomorrow in San Francisco.
