Jacks Open Conference Season With Scoreless Draw

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.--- Cal Poly Humboldt got things started in CCAA play with a 0-0 tie against the Gators of San Francisco State on Friday afternoon at Cox Stadium. Four different Lumberjacks, including Dylan Tovani, Juan Perez, Edgar Gonzalez and Nico Herrera Land, combined for six shot attempts for Humboldt. Herrera-Land accounted for two of the Jacks' three shot on goal attempts while goalkeeper Adrian Gallardo recorded three saves in his second straight shutout.

FIRST HALF: Herrera-Land wasted no time in attempting to generate some offense for the Jacks as his shot attempt in the fourth minute was saved by Gator goalkeeper Matias Herrera Fuentes. San Francisco would have its own chance to score in the 19th minute, but Julio Ponce Gonzalez's shot was saved by Gallardo. The Gators would stay aggressive in the first half with seven shot attempts to Humboldt's one. Gallardo would save another shot by San Francisco's Kendrick Rivas in the 43rd minute to keep the game scoreless going into halftime.

SECOND HALF: Dylan Tovani attempted a shot in the 51st minute, but this attempt would also be saved by Herrera Fuentes. Juan Perez followed up just minutes later, but his attempt would launch off target over the top. Both teams would be forced to play the remainder of the match with 10 players after red cards were issued to Humboldt's Marcus Abdel-Malek and San Francisco's Manuell Kariuki in the 64th minute. Herrera Land's second shot on goal attempt of the match would come with less than 10 minutes remaining, but his attempt down the middle was again saved by Herrera Fuentes. Edgar Gonzalez would attempt one more last chance attempt in the closing seconds, but his shot would miss high to end the game in a 0-0 stalemate.

STATS: San Francisco had more shot attempts overall (10-6), but Humboldt was more aggressive in the second half, outshooting the Gators 5-3 after a slow offensive start. For Gallardo, this afternoon's shutout was his second in a row and fourth so far this season.

UP NEXT: Humboldt (1-2-5, 0-0-1 CCAA) will travel North over the Golden Gate Bridge to finish off their weekend with a match against Sonoma State in Rohnert Park on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 2pm.
