Poor Shooting Night Dooms Humboldt on the Road

Jacks fall to 4-4 in conference play

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif--- Madison Parry scored 18 points and grabbed 16 rebounds, but ultimately, the Cal Poly Humboldt Lumberjacks failed to overcome a poor shooting performance as the team fell to the San Francisco State Gators, 56-59 on Saturday evening. Jaydon Williams scored 10 points while Zyan Smith and Devon Lewis each pulled down six rebounds in the loss, which gives the Jacks a .500 record eight games into the conference season.

GAME RECAP
The game started slow paced, with only two field goals in the first four minutes of action. A 3-pointer by Jaydon Williams gave the Jacks their first lead of the contest with 3:43 left in the first quarter. A jumper by Muirae Gomez with five seconds remaining cut the lead to three as Humboldt finished the first frame of action up 10-7. The Gators kept things close through the first half and took the lead with seven minutes remaining in the half behind a Mya Blake 3-pointer. A Samaria Velasquez free throw followed by another Blake 3-pointer widened the gap to six with six minutes left in the second frame. The Jacks responded minutes later and tied the game at the three minute mark behind a Parry jumper in the paint after a steal by Sarah Ahmadpour. A Zyan Smith 3-pointer just a minute later gave Humboldt the lead again. The Jacks and Gators would trade 3's for the next two possession, as Humboldt entered the half holding a slim 29-28 lead.

The Jacks kicked off the second half with two back-to-back 3-pointers by Devon Lewis and Madison Parry to take a six point lead, but the Gators responded with two back-to-back field goals of their own to bring the lead down to two. A 3-point shot by Jolene Armendariz with 3:12 left in the third gave the Gators their first lead of the half as San Francisco State finished the third quarter on a 12-4 run to enter the final frame of action with a 46-40 advantage. Humboldt closed the gap to one point multiple times in the fourth quarter, but didn't take the lead until the last 90 seconds of regulation after Jaydon Williams hit a shot in the paint to give the Lumberjacks a slim 56-55 advantage. Free throws proved to be crucial down the stretch as both teams found themselves in the bonus. Blake knocked down two from the stripe with less than 30 seconds remaining to regain the lead for San Francisco State. Zyan Smith attempted a shot in the paint with 20 seconds, but missed and was forced to foul. The Jacks caught a break when the second of Taimane Lesa-Hardee's free throws was called off due to a lane violation with 16 seconds left, but failed to capitalize after Armendariz rebounded a missed Ahmadpour 3-pointer with seven seconds remaining. The team was again forced to fould as San Francisco came away with a 59-56 victory.
